Impressive but is it's reign near it's end?
It lives up to hype For All Mountain Riding and is most at home with technical xc and some downhill fun thrown in. She does everything from ups and down and is very similar to the Blur which lacks the Orange 5 iconic status. Problem with an iconic bike is like a hyped movie is it can be so easily defeated by it's set expectations rather to be fair (and not to be ostracised by all my many good orange 5 riding buddies who I know are gritting their teeth reading this) than it's ability.

Number 5 is ALIVE!!!!
I came off a light weight Marin single pivot and tried several multi link/virtual pivot bikes before narrowing my choice down to the Santa Cruz Blur LT and the Orange 5.
The Blur had had superb reviews and I had built a dream of owning one around them, I demo'd it and a 5 back to back (bumping in to some ibike riders on the way), but the reality of the Blur just wasn't as fantastic as I'd built the dream to be - The 5 however just blew me away - decision made.

just constantly has you thinking - so what can I ride next that will challenge me further
balance composed ride - superb over the rough stuff - inspires confidence
climbs well - suprised by the absence of Bob (though I don't miss him) the custom tuned Fox RP23 is just stunning
Orange upgrade packages brilliant value for money and include all the right stuff - well priced and well thought out - complement the bike superbly.
race face bottom bracket will be 1st thing to go
snapped the upgraded fizik saddle - warranty sorting this though
makes you want to go faster and bigger and harder (hurts when you go too fast/big/hard)
standard spec conti mountain king tyres (2.2in) bit sketchy/skittish and pinch flat too easily

... I have an Orange 5 having started biking in January. It's a smile to set up confidence inspiring bike. Easy to climb. Not too sketchy on bigger stuff. I already feel like I have gained some massive confidence and the Orange 5 helps with this. Get better tyres (I am on High Rollers having tried the Ardents but whilst heavier nothing grips better) and a shorter stem (now on a 50) I have also upgraded the wheels to land some bigger stuff and stay true. THe bike has seen 3 times a week use but after 6 months the saddle creaks (simple to fix) and the BB is probably on it's way out too. But I have falling off a lot in the time I have been learning! So the Orange 5 has ridden Glentress - Red and Black, Fort William Downhill Black and the new Red, Laggan Black and nothing broken yet...so well done Orange! Cheers |
