Biking Gear and Accessories
Cycling is one of the best ways of staying fit whilst also being a legitimate means of transport. Of course cycling is also great fun, whether mountain biking, road biking, downhilling, or any of the other pedal powered pursuits.
Mountain biking is in fact a relatively new sport, with what are currently referred to as mountain bikes not appearing until the late 1970s. Since then there have been dramatic improvements in cycling technology, and much of this has been applied to dedicated mountain bikes. Suspension, disc brakes, and high performance tyres are just a few of the notable developments in mountain bike technology.
Of course people have always ridden bicycles offroad, but earlier designs bear far more similarity to modern road bikes. That is not to say that road bikes have been slow to develop, as the new era of aluminium and carbon framed racing bikes are a triumph of design and function. The variety of road bikes means there are models for any and every application, from single speed race bikes to long distance tourers.
The right cycle clothing makes all the difference, whichever the discipline. Wicking, breathable fabrics allow moisture to be drawn away from the body. This process serves a number of functions, both preventing overheating and chill caused by sweat drying on the skin. Combine the base layer with an insulative mid layer where required. A lightweight fleece is a good option, by Bench for example.
A windproof and waterproof outer layer is an essential. A softshell jacket will suffice in dry weather, with Altura providing great options. Dedicated cycling gear often features sleeves cut for protection of the hands and wrists, and added cover for the lower back, so makes more sense than a standard waterproof.
When the upper layers serve these functions, it enables lighter clothing to be worn on the lower half. In all but the coldest conditions a lightweight lycra short will suffice, with thermal tights the preferred option in harsh conditions.
The sun, heat and dehydration can take a toll on cyclists in any branch of the sport. Accessorise with a cap to keep the sun off, and consider a hydration pack for longer rides. Take on as much water as possible, as it is easy to become dehydrated without knowing it.
The choice of biking shoes is a vital decision. For milder weather and lighter usage, a pair of lightweight trainers such as one of the range of Vans slip on shoes will serve the purpose. For more serious riders, a dedicated cycle shoe will be required, and Northwave is a great place to start. These shoes offer exceptional grip and support, and some models feature exceptional quality carbon soles.
