CYCLE CARRIERSI recently bought a roof mounted cycle carrier from Halfords. I went for the Halfords Advanced and the Thule 591 Roof Mount Carrier. I will review them shortly in the meantime here is a list from them of their full Halfords branded range from Roof Mounted, Rear Mounted, Tow Bar and 4 x 4.

Halfords cycle carriers are designed to be universal, with the range of products fitting most cars. Halfords in-store specialists nationwide are on hand to offer friendly and professional advice on selecting the best cycle carrier for your needs. What’s more they will even fit it for you!

For online customers, help is at hand to find the most suitable carrier for your car. The Halfords advice centre has a full listing of unsuitable fits.

If you have been inspired to take to the road, here’s Halfords guide to cycle carriers to get you on your way:

Roof Mounted

If it’s a roof mounted carrier you are after, look no further. Halfords Advanced Roof Mount Cycle Carrier, priced, £74.37, is suitable for carrying 2 bikes. Not only is this the safest and most secure way to transport bikes, it leaves the rear of your vehicle free to tow caravans or trailers and gives access to the boot. For roof mounted carriers you will also need roof bars to secure the system to your vehicle, which are available from £34.99

Rear Mounted

If you are looking for a rear mounted cycle carrier, try the Halfords Advanced Rear High Mount Cycle Carrier. Available at £89.78 this can be fixed directly onto your car and is suitable to carry up to three bikes. By using a rear mounted carrier, you can leave your roof free to carry other loads such as roof boxes. One thing you should bear in mind for these particular carriers though is, if the bikes cover the rear lights or number plate you will need a lighting board, available in Halfords stores for £19.99, plus a number plate from £13.69.

Tow Bar

If your vehicle is already fitted with a tow bar, the Thule towbar cycle carrier may be the answer for you. The towbar mount carries up to three bikes securely at a low loading level. Priced at £109.61 towbar carriers are a great option if you would like easy access to your boot. As with the rear mounted carrier, you should consider the visibility of your vehicles rear lights and number plate.

4x4

Another option available is the 4x4 Carrier. This is a secure way for 4x4 drivers to carry bikes leaving the roof free to carry other loads. Fitting onto the rear mounted spare wheel, the 4x4 carriers transports up to two bikes. Available from £79.76, you really have no excuse not to take your bikes with you this summer.

I have used both the rear mount and the roof racks, managed to get them at half price at the time of purchase too!! The rear rack is very sturdy and secure once you have the straps sorted. My advice is to ensure the dumb-bell straps (ones that feed through the boot door) are the side straps and not the top fed. The only gripe I have is the initial setup. From flat, it can take up to 15 minutes to shape the rack, install it on the car and then fit the bikes. Apart from that, I thought it was very secure and didn't doubt the overall strength.

The roof mounted racks are a doddle compared to the rear mount. The wheel mounts are movable to allow for different sized bikes and the grip arm is very sturdy and has the added bonus of a lock, just like the mount itself. Compared to the rear rack, you can have two bikes on the roof, mounted and locked easily within a minute if you're fast enough. One thing I don't like about them is the fast that it makes my car look crap and is best suited for vans, 4x4's and estates, the latter I will shortly be buying.
