Exposed! Without the necessary skills - my skills blog

In my own mind I may have convinced myself I was right up there with my riding, so over the past year I considered taking my riding to the next level. I thought about doing a skills course, but in the end they were either too far away, or they never got back to me or it was too much hassle and "Hey!" I was doing ok. Wasn't I?". I mean I can go for miles and miles and then go back for more, really...

Well, all that changed over a few weeks in November and December. I had recently hooked up with a few local guys who are super technical, fast and been mountain biking for many years. Me? I have maybe 2 or 3 years experience of mainly solo riding behind me. Most of these guys now ride single speeds, but I won't hold that against them. I thought "Well that is different, but lets give them a go".

British Columbia is the ultimate in worldwide riding destinations. Having the North Shore, Whistler and many other world renowned destinations only a stone’s throw away makes any cyclist drool with envy. There are times though, when even we see that the grass is greener on the other side. As I sit, staring out into the gloom of incessant rain and rapidly melting snow, I look south for sweet relief.

At the end of the month I am heading south to the warmth of California. Ryan Leech and myself are climbing into the team van and heading through Washington and Oregon then into California. The plan is to make this a riding road trip; we will meet up with media such as mtbr.com, decline, bike and many more. We will see the sights, we will ride our bikes and we we hopefully see some sun along the way.

Happy New Year to you all

A very Happy New Year to everyone.

I'm not sure if you have been keeping up with the news, but from today the Mayor has authorised the use of bus lanes by powered 2 wheelers (motorbikes and scooters). This is an 18 month trial which is going ahead despite a fairly vocal protests by the Cyclists Touring Club (CTC) - think the "AA" for bikes, and London Cycle Campaign(LCC).

This year has been a mental year for me riding on my Orange 5.

After having trick pink Hope brakes fitted in the Christmas break, New Year's Eve 2007 was spent bedding them in at Thetford... A place we all know and love for all year round riding, so all good for the late December jaunt.

Nearly the end of the year...

It's almost the end of the year. I always seem to find myself in a thoughtful and reflective mood around this time, and started thinking of happy memories of Afan, beautiful trails, the DropOff cafe and the post-ride buzz in there in the evenings, setting up tents at midnight in the snow... and how much I'm looking forward to repeating all that next year. That got me thinking more about what else I've experienced and what I would like to do next.

Wild Weekend In Wales - Day 3 - Penhydd Trail

Once again with breakfast unhurried and chance to chat with the other riders who were staying at the B&B, our enthusiasm was not as in plenty as before due to our aching limbs and the heavy frost that covered everything in its icy reach.

Sparky was in much pain from his fall and had decided to call it a day... he needed to return home.

With our gear sorted and cars defrosted we made our way along the white roads to Afan Forest Park Visitors Centre, where we had a walk to stretch our legs and a hot drink to thermally insulated our insides before we began our ascent.

Wild Weekend in Wales - Day 1 - Whites Level

I just love the alarm going off at 4.15am... even more so when I know I'm off on an epic to Wales to ride the mountains of life.

I was even more looking forward to this jaunt, as Tomks and I were to be meeting up with Appleyam. He had also decided to brave the unpredictable Welsh weather. We knew Sparky would be making an appearance too as he had already arranged to meet some of riding buddies there.

I read today that Barnardo's has launched a new campaign to highlight what it calls "disturbing intolerance" of children. It appears we have created an unwelcoming society for children!

Winter returns with a vengeance!!

Decided with the return of the cold and wet (not that the summer was dry!) to put the winter tyres on the bikes, Jo's Safire doesn't look too bad but my Enduro looks a bit silly with skinny tyres on (1.9 Trailrakers instead of the 2.3 Eskars!!) good job it's dark in the evening!!.
