Balblair mountain bike trails are set in the Scottish Highlands in the Kyle of Sutherland in awesome scenery and are notable for the level of rock and slab riding throughout. There are two mains MTB trails the black and the blue. It is part of the Kyle of Sutherland mountain bike trails and has a sister trail network called Carbisdale.
Black Trail
- The short but not for the fainthearted 7 mile black is technical and rocky and for competent and experienced riders. There is also a slightly shorter 5 mile option. It's challenging but will leave you a bit in awe. It is most renowned for the rock slabs (check out the video) known locally as 'Rock Hard’ and ‘Candy Mountain’. There are also shore sections and the ups are pretty tough so fitness is core here.
Blue Trail
- The dead short 2 mile blue is a fun flowing snappy beginners trail. You ride through a section known as ‘Whoopy do’ which has a forest feel and then end on a smooth down known as the 'Ceilidh Trail’. These are actually the start and end of the black run.
- The scenery in Balblair is breath-taking. It's a bit of a hidden gem and you need a bike that can ride uphills and the skills for the down.
So I'm guessing many of you keep thinking why is the name Balblair so familiar? but then maybe just can't put your finger on it! Well Balblair is a Scotch Single malt and it's bottles design is based on ancient local monument called the Clach Biorach ( "Sharp Stone") which is a three-metre Standing Stone located a 1/4 mile from the distillery, which is rumoured to be 4000 years old! Maybe pick some up whilst down there.
