Coed Llandegla Mountain Biking Centre near Wrecham in North Wales has green and bue mountain biking trails suitable for beginners and family groups, more challenging routes for experienced bikers including a red, a black run, a bike park and a pump track. All tracks are completely enclosed within the forest, with no main roads to cross. Within the Visitor Centre there is a café and a variety of facilities for bikers such as a jet wash, bike hire and a shop and all this just 7 miles from Wrexham and 14 miles from Chester.
Red: 18km
- If you are a proficient mountain biker with a high skill level then you must try this fantastic route. This trail shares the same gradual ascent through the forest with the ‘Beginner’ (blue) route. When it splits off at the top of the forest, the longer red route sends you on a series of more technical challenges, with unsurfaced singletrack (0.6m-1.2m) and steep flowing sections of trail cutting through the more remote areas of the forest (see the personal safety information above). This trail utilises huge unavoidable bermed switchbacks, whoops, water crossings, tabletops and boardwalk. As well as being a longer route there are also more uphill and downhill sections.
Black: 21km
-
The black runs are predominantly steeper downhill stretches and they have much more challenging technical features. These sections of trail are designed for mountain bikers who are used to physically demanding routes. They require the use of a good quality, well-serviced mountain bike. They contain long sections of steep, largely stable but unsurfaced trail of 0.6m or greater and include unavoidable obstacles with large steps, gaps and dropoffs. Some timber structures have exposed edges and a trail width of only 1 metre, and there are sections of steep, technically challenging climbs.
Blue 12km
- So you have a good level of fitness and you want to give mountain biking a go? This is a great route to try before embarking on the longer ‘Intermediate’ Route. It is still 12km in length, and there is a gradual climb up through the forest until it splits with the Intermediate Route at the top of the forest. Then comes the essence of what mountain biking is all about - you are rewarded for your uphill climb! There is a great route to be enjoyed back to the Centre – which is mostly comprised of gradual downhills - but interspersed with a few gentle uphill sections, just to keep you on your toes! This route also has a selection of small humps and other features to add a degree of challenge! The route can also be wet and muddy in places depending on the weather conditions.
Green: 5km
- A waymarked route of approximately 5km has been developed specifically with families in mind. The route avoids major climbs and technical sections, and concentrates on allowing families to experience off-road cycling in a fun and safe way. The surfaces encountered on this route are generally hard packed but there are sections which are loose, uneven or muddy at times. The route allows riders to ascend gently from the car park, through the forest and on to the reservoir, with its views of the Clwydian Range. After cycling around the reservoir, the route meanders back through the forest before the final descent which sweeps down to the Visitor Centre, providing you with an opportunity for a well earned cup of tea and piece of cake!
Skills Area
- The Coed Llandegla Forest 'Skills Area' offers a safe place to learn mountain bike techniques and build confidence before setting out on the trails. This area is also be used for mountain bike training courses.
Free Ride Area
- For the more experienced rider, this area offers access to dirt and built jumps, drops and manmade stunts.
Pump Track
- How far can your momentum take you? The pump track is a loop of rollers and berms – teaching riders to maintain and gain speed, with the minimum of pedalling.
Dual Slalom
- Test your skills in a head to head race on this purpose built trail. It's fast and furious as you tackle berms, jumps and bumps on near identical tracks.

The trails (blue, red and black) are set up as a single fire road climb, from the car park to the top of the hill, which then sets you off on a pretty fast and furious blast through the forest - this isn't problematic in and of itself, but you need to be aware of what you are letting yourself in for, if you don't like this more "downhill-lite" approach to mountain biking, and you prefer singletrack climbs and link ups, then Llandegla may not be for you.
That aside - once you get to the top of the hill, the trails from then on are very good fun indeed, the blue is particularly notable as being particularly *fun* in the grade, and is where I will be taking my kids when they are old enough to slog up to the top of the route.

Very good, but a critical view needed.
The overall impression that you get from the above is that this is an excellent trail centre, which is not something which I disagree with, however, there is no mention of any of the obvious problems which the trails suffer from - namely the overall nature of them.

This is one of those trails that the designers got right from the word go. It has something for everyone including green and blue ...not just black and red.
You can have a bad riding day and still have a great bike day if you get what I mean.... generally rideable in most weathers.
Can still have a good days fast riding when wet.

Llandegla Super Trail Centre
This is a very carefully thought through Trail which will appeal to the average ability rider as much as the very experienced. Definately has to be visited

The Black splits away fro the Red and rejoins it. There are further excursions as well making for variety and choice. Fundamentally you will have fun no matter what you do but the all important level of choice is there, which makes this Trail exceptional. Climbs are hard but rewarding, except the last section where the climbing to descending ratio is about equal.
It gets really packed at weekends with the overflow car park having to be used.

It's only snow that stops it from being open, generally all the trails are O.K all year round.
Great flow to all the trails and you just choose from black to green. They are well designed too.
Really great fun trails that make for a great day out.
Ther are skill areas and pump tracks and also a freeride area which is really wild.
The Black and Red inter-twine, which is good but the end is an interesting Red but with more climbing that decent.
I have to drive 1.5 hours from east Manchester to get there.
Gets very crowded at weekends.
Sometimes walkers stray onto the trails.

It's real strength is that every trail, from blue to blac,k is doeble but becomes far more demanding according to the speed with which you attack it. This translates into a trail where you will always enjoy the riding. Any experienced rider knows how fustrating it is to have a confidence sapping bad day...& let's face it with fuel costs and parking costs it's important to get the best out of each ride. If you are off the pace at Llandegla you can just "throttle-back" but still have a fine ride.
Again let me enphasise that it has real all-weather potential.

LLandegla Black New Sections
This trail has knocked the Whytes level off my top trail list to take pole position. It offers an optional set of black runs parallel to a red route. The terrain is woodland and the scenery very cool. I love the way shore joins places together and think the trail is really well built with flowing berms, tight corners, rows and rows of rollers and jumps that go on for ever. The new black line is amazing made up up rocky step ups, jumps and a great long line of shore. Overall a big mix of grin busting descents. Got to be tried. There is also a brill skills park for jumps, drops and pump. Top notch cafe and friendly folk.
