Location
It is a gateway site to the North York Moors National Park and offers splendid views of Roseberry Topping to the south. Points of local interest include Highcliff Nab and Hanging Stone. Captain Cook’s Monument is also a short ride distance. About Black Cycle Route A circular route of varied surfaces and in parts some steep ascents and descents. High levels of skill and off-road experience with high endurance fitness required. The route is waymarked with the black arrows on posts. Guisborough forest offers loads of fun single track that is shouting out to be explored while the moors offersd miles and miles of senic riding.
A steady climb away from the walkway riding fireroads will take you to the Black Cycle Route. Dont ride it! Well not straight away. The Black route is a very old and boring cycle route that should be graded red or less but it does have some fun parts. To get the best out of Guisborough Forest and the North Yorks Moors cycle through and up the fire roads and head up onto the North Yorks Moors. There are many land marks that can be easily seen if any rider gets lost. Once on the moors a steady ride to Captain Cooks Monument will include some great moorland track with a nice technical desent and long climb back up to the monument. Once up there enjoy the views of the Cleveland hills, Teeside and The North York Moors. Good spot to enjoy energy bar and a photo moment. Now the fun begins. From here is all about exploring, the choice offers a just out of sight instant downhill that twists and turns with rock drops, rooty steps. A rocky path downhill that flows into various nice little single tracks. And the easy desent that was just climbed upto the monument that will take you back towards the moors. Which ever choice was taken, most routes will take you back towards Guisborough. If riders want to stay on the moors then they can spend hours riding bridleways in all directions for miles. Take a map for this and enjoy. If more fun and adventure is needed then head back towards the forest and explore. There will be many local riders out there hitting the trails and they are a friendly bunch, just ask them to show you which are the best trails to ride and they will proberbly take you there. Ask for the favorites: 'The Secret Path' This is a cycle black route climb that now gets ridden backwards - downhill. A great fun section that is around a couple of k's of technical desending over rooty, rocky drops with hundreds of different lines to blast through down to a main fire road. A couple of rides of this section and you'll realise its a classic! 'The Chute' A hidden Gem that everyone wants to ride, I've even seen a que to get onto this flowing desent. The Chute starts with a twisty line through some tight gaps in trees into a fast natural desending valley that flows what feels like high speed, turning and swooping down. Every so often a nice obstical like a jump, double, drop off etc presents itself down the path of the chute. Either hit the obstical or take the chicken run. The Chute seems to get faster and faster the further down as you go. The more you attack it the better it gets. Once at the bottom you will have a big smile! You will walk up the fire road beside it and you will ride it again and again. There are many other trails like this dotted around the forest. Its very hard to explain how to find them. As I said before, the best way is to explore. Or even better contact the guys on www.mtbguisborough.ning.com. We will welcome anyone to join us and show you around. Wether your a beginner and a hardcore rider, we can show you what you want to ride in the forest or the moors.
