Peak District LadyBower Reservoir 19.06.2010
Peak District LadyBower Reservoir Mountain biking: 4 O’clock in the morning and the alarm rings out. OMG! what is happening?…….Oh! that’s ok, it’s Saturday and we’re not going to work; we are going out to PLAY
. 5 O’clock in the morning and we’re in the car, heading out towards the Peak District to ride the Ladybower Resevoir route……including the BEAST!!!!
We arrived at Fairholmes Visitor Centre around 8 am, that’s including stops, practically no traffic and a couple of mis-direction reading from both myself and my navigator reader (keven) of the sat nav.
So we sat and watched the ducks and ducklings while we tried to nod off for a short spell. By 9 am one of the guys we’re meeting up with arrives and we chat while we wait for the others to show up. By 10 am everyone is here and we get ready to go, doing one last round of the car park to see if anyone else did show.
10:15 and we’re off 7 ‘slow unfit riders’ but if you watch any of the videos posted on bikeradar forum you would know they weren’t all unfit slow riders.
What the hell how many climbs! is there an oxygen tent at the top? aaaaaarrrrrrgggghhhhh! I think my lungs are gonna burst!
Out in the open manoeuvring round the rocks dodging and weaving, I like this, my lungs are getting back to normal though I’ve drained my camelback of the water I was carrying and started on the bottle of juice I’ve got on my Trek 8000 hardtail.
I thought the climbs were a mare but even the most veteran of riders would find some of the descents a challenge, I managed most; just about. I’m always wary on descents anyway at the best of times, but these were rocky descents with boulders. By the time we came to play with the BEAST I was all shook up! I took one look and said No Way boys you can go and play, but I’m walking. Some of the boulders were huge the videos don’t do this ride justice; you’ll watch them and think……yeah I could do this, but up close and personal………that’s a different story, you just have to go and see it for yourself. I did get on and ride a few bits of it, but not enough to be able to say I rode the BEAST!
All in all an absolutely fabulous day out with a great bunch of guys. Maybe one day I’ll learn how to lift my front wheel off the ground to get over obstacles to.
looking forward to the next time we get out to play alongside such a great group of people
