Surrey hills consists of 3 great hills I can talk to that are pure mountain bike heaven. These are Leith Hill, Pitch Hill and Holmsbury Hill. It is a combination of natural and purpose built single-track in a great countryside setting. Miles and miles of trails cover this area. It is not way-marked so either get a map, or hook up with a local group. Nirvana Cycles organise rides and their are a few Facebook groups that organise rides on an informal basis here. Many of the trails here have their own names such as Barry Knows Best, Yoghurt Pots, Deliverance, Reservoir Dogs, Summer Lightning and so on.

Being the highest point in the North Downs you would expect it to be the best riding accessible to London and Home counties riders. The thing is you would not expect it to be quite as good as it is. There are 10's of miles of singletrack in their multitude and the opportunity to mix and match and piece together trails is something else. Great work from Redlands Trails in making it all happen

The trails are diverse and you will find berms, drops, roots, switchbacks all in abundance. It has some sections which are really steep and others which are really steep and really gnarly. There is some wood dotted around (some quite hardcore) but looks mainly unofficial.

It's worth going with a local (there are a few here at iBikeRide) or hooking up with a local group. One of the recommended ones is the group that meet at Nirvana Cycles in Westcott. Word of warning dont be late as they dont wait.

Facilities are limited but two of the best stop off points are at The Tower the highest point on Leith Hill for tea and cake and in the valley in Peaslake Village is the village store for more tea and cake (Good friendly Bike shop Pedal and Spoke there too where you can hire bikes and buy gear etc) . Both are unmissable due the reasonably constant swarm of bikers around them.

London has some great mountain bike trail centres in it's back yard, aka the Home CountiesSMILEYS_WINK. Swinley, Chicksands, Epping, Aston Hill to name some of the best. In all my mountain bike rides so far this year the ten or so at Surrey Hills have been some of if not the best.

Holmbury Hill (Surrey Hills)

I have been demoing bikes in the Surrey Hills and had decided to take each one out on the same route for consistency. Good news is that over a period of 6 weeks I have managed a to knit together quite a neat little route and so wanted to share. Starting in Peaslake (the Mecca of mtb'ers in the South) I fill up on sarnies to take with me. I don't yet have a map attahced but I'm back on Sunday and will use the Mapmyride app to get the map together. For now a description of the trail..

Facing the village store in Peaslake I take the first road to the right up the hill. After half a mile of road riding you come to a junction just after a car park. I go up a steep entrance to the left to an open enclosure. I continue in the same direction up on the fire track and at the second junction of single-track I head off to the left. This is a beautiful twisty single-track (with some roots) which eventually brings you out up a hill to a large open space. You head past and round the enclosure which is to your right and you are back at the same junction from before where the road hit the fire track. Go straight over road and along single-track and you are on Barry Knows Best. This is a decent downhill run that is super fast with roots, little roller jumps to kick off, steep bits and wonderful berms. Grin city.

At the end you take the right fire track up the hill. At the top of the hill you take the sharp corner to the right and for a mile take you back to the start of Barry Knows best. Continue and cross the road back up steep little fire track you did before and then continue up the hill. You go to the point you turned left on before and this time go right and veer off to the left. More lovely twist single-track that brings you out to a car park. At enf od car park where the map is take the down to the left and join the fire track again to the left and continue up gradually to the viewing point half a mile of that ahead.

At the viewing point stop and take in viewsSMILEYS_SMILE (good lunch spot) Next head to left on fire track and continue for 500 yds until single-track trail appears on right. This is a myriad of berms, bomb holes and switchbacks called the Yoghurt Pot. Enjoy!. At the end you veer to the right on the fire track and then at bottom of hill 50 yds on take left fork up the hill and you enter a labyrinth of twisty Single-track. This crosses over a fire track and then more of the same. This section is brilliant for practicing pumping over little steps. Eventually you hit a straight line of single-track. Take the fork to the right into the bushes and veer round to the right gradually (easy to miss this right hand fork). After a while of what feels like you are veering back on yourself parallel to before you hit a T junction. Head down to left and drop to a fire track. At the bottom take fire track go right for 300 yds and take single-track that veers to to right and then you shortly hit a bridleway and go left until the end. At the end is a quadrant of fire track. Go right and head up for 400 yds. Then just after a (way mark) post take sneaky little earthy twist and turny downhill single-track. This leads you on a lovely twisty down ending with the Holmbury Village Hall and car park. Don't take final 10 meter descent into car park. Instead head of left along wide bridle path which goes on for just under a mile and then veers to right and up. Follow round to right and then it will take you onto fire track junction. turn right and continue on firetrack for half a mile.

You pass the same way marked post as before continue beyond it. Again you will pass the junction you cut through when on the labyrinth imbetween the two sections. Go a bit further on along sandy fire track and you see a turning on right going up onto singletrack. Go to right for fifty feet and then over bridleway crossing and through the next 50 foot section then veer to left along twisty lovely single-track for 1 mile. At end you will see three fire track roads. Take the middle one to the right heading on a gradula gradient up and you end up back at the Viewing point. Return same way as originally before towards Barry Knows best where you can redo the final section you did at the start. It's worth doing again.

At the end of Barry knows best. Take bike through stile at bottom along single track that runs parallel to the road. NB Just before the end dismount as their is a drop that takes you into line of cars which is a mad place for a drop and should be a controlled stop really. Carry a long the road to right and you end up back in Peaslake for tea and cake at Village store.

If you whippet it, then maybe around 2 hours. Otherwise at a social pace with a break for lunch a good 2.30 - 3 hours. Decent trail..Next I plan to look how to connect the trail to Leith Hill SMILEYS_SMILE

Good Points
Good elevation for the south of England with good ascent and descent and flowing singletrack.
Bad Points
Some of the ups and connecting parts are fire track and you do pass the same points on the track a little often but it feels right none the less.

Surrey Hills Mountain Bike Guides

Good Points
The sheer number of trails in the area ranks The Surrey Hills up there with the best trail centres. However to find them all on a first visit can be difficult. Best to ride with someone who know the trails well or hire an experience local mtb guide such as Surrey Hills Mountain Bike Guides - the local guiding company to connect the trails together into a challenging and flowing ride.

http://www.surreyhillsmountainbikeguides.co.uk

The purpose built trails are incredible, but don't forget the miles and miles of improved deer trails and tracks which wind their way down all sides of the hills.

Ask for Barry Know's Best, Yogurt Pots, Summer Lightning, Deliverence, Personal Hygiene, Reguritator, Flick the Vs, I Should Coco, Waggle Dance to name but a few.
Bad Points
Away from the Greensand geological areas, which provide amazing natural drainage, some trails can get muddy and stay muddy after prolonged rain. In winter a mud tyre may be preferred although I sometimes find a lightly treaded race tyre can often be as effective as it clears the local mud quicker.

There is currently no visitor centre, but you can find a good brew and tasty food at The Plough in Coldharbour, the tower Cafe in the top of Leith Hill, Peaslake Stores and The Volunteer in Abinger.

Surrey hills a little bit of Wales in England

The listing pretty much says it all. Its a stones throw from Guildford and Dorking and reasonably accesible from the big smoke. If you are looking for that all day wales feeling and are trapped down south then this is where you need to head.
