Llandegla Black Run
Friday morning my day off , so i'm think what should i do, ummm Llandegla not done this for a while. Well i've done the Blue Route and the Red Route but not the Black Run, can this be done on a hardtail, well i guess i will have to find out.
Well i arrive 11.45AM, blue skys sun shining very warm, but hay no rain which means no mud no puddles and i stay clean for a change. well i'm hungry and firsty and i need a bacon butty before this big ride, they say there bacon butties are the best ummm we will see, ummm they are . Well its time to get my kit on and go for a ride of my life.
As you well know the start begins up hill and nice and steady, tracks are dry and there's been some work on the red route to, and some repairs to the trails excellent. So i'm all excited for this challenge, so looking forward to it, ok Lets go . long climbs are always at the start of this trail centre Llandegla, its an excellent place to come from warrington 30 minute drive away. Anyway i'm climbing really good breathing is excellent bike nice and smooth after my good service that i do on my bike "ha", so the climb is long and this hill leaves no prisoners and yes me to, slowly i catch up to the guys all kitted out for the black run, knee pads elbow pads fullface, umm i thinking now, nar sod it just do it, i climb and past them very easy soon i arrive at the top and its down hill to the blue section which in turn will lead to the red then the black which splinters of from the red route.
Well i'm here the dreaded BLACK RUN , well its big and very rocky at the start, i have heard its smooth further on, then thats where it all starts. Ok i'm ready- go its fast and very rocky to start with they've chopped a lot off trees down and you can see into the distance and see other riders , so the challenge is on , no prisoners just go for it, the trail is fast and switch backs are tight and like a roller coaster, I catch more riders and leave them in the distance's, there's some small climbs and quite rocky, to much power and the wheels will spin and i will hit the deck , but i made the climb and now into the depths of the forest , oh yes this is looking cool huge burns and table tops from big to small but all fun.
I hit the main single tracks through the forest and there fast, so fast that i have my arse over the back of my saddle and staying cool and not chicken out on the drops, skimming through the trees tight burns through the trees hit some kind of G force as you rise then drop, leaving gravity to do all the work when you hit the line to speed along again, its smooth and fast just the way it should be , drop after drop burn after burn you are in your zone , no stopping no one in front of you , its fast and still going down tight burns bring you back inline down the trail , then suddenly you turn sharp right, "my god it's steep " you have no choice its on you so quick and you are beckoned to the granny ring , its tough sweaty and your legs are pumping every strenght you can muster up these climbs , my arse is on the edge of the saddle to far back and i'm off, to far forward the wheels will spin under power and i will crumble to the ground.
So the climb i make it , my heart is racing and getting my second wind , not long before i'm on the next single Black trail, this is more faster and more tighter my lips are dry my helmet wet through with sweat, dripping down my face slowly passing by my left eye down to my cheek , sunglasses steaming up can't see a thing, so i take them off only to feel refreshed and ready to fly down more single track , so i begin fast and smooth under control and feeling good really good , i don't know what time these guys do this in but i'm really flying, soon though i meet the climb once again only to struggle every peddle turn, 5 minutes later i finally make it to the top onto fire road, oh yes its level and slowly dipping down in the distance , i can see that big high wooden bridge , god its high and short which was a surprise, as i've seen this so many times on youtube and it looks longer. Anyway its back on to the red route and long board walk over the boggy section off the Llandegla forest , soon i see other riders in the distance all geared up, Ok i know every guy and girl like to gear up for some black run , but to be honest i think this must be the safest trail i've been on and well maintained.
It's not like Afan or Cli-machx where there are real rocky section and megga drops to one side , its quite tame to be honest but very enjoyable.
So now its heading back time to the centre, its been a very good day and summer has come at last . Oh did the run in 1hr 26 mins ....
