August 18, 2009 -- My children and I were a part of a Highpoint Hummer off-road tour on this evening. This 4x4 trail crossed the famous single track of Moab's Slickrock bike trail.

At this junction the 3 vehicles stopped to enjoy the depth of Abuss Canyon spread below the cliff upon which our trail was perched. My 5 year old had to piddle. Being familiar with the outdoors of the desert I kept her away from the rock, knowing Black Widow Spiders are at home  near the ground in these overhangs and clefts.

I took a closer look to observe the tell tale cylinder web home of the Black Widow. There she was upside down adoring her fuzzy white egg sack. My daughter was so excited. As she turned around, two mountain bike riders were negotiating a plunge at that junction, so she stopped them and together, she and I, showed them the nest. It was then that I noticed, barely perceivable young were scrambling about on some webbing higher up from the mother's cylinder. I wondered how I missed that? The bikers were from UK and had a super lens for close up shots.

Well, by this time, the other vehicles accompanying our outing were arriving and my daughter was off to share the discovery. That next car load had to wait in line, for this amazing fact of nature was being captured by camera.

I wish I would have thought to ask about where the biker might post some of those shots. I simply forget to even try to capture this Spider-Full moment.

Very cool.
