Hicks Lodge is a trail centre located near Ashby de la Zouch in Leicestershire.

It features a visitor centre with all the usual facilities - car parking, cafe, bike shop, bike hire, toilets, as well as a blue mountain bike trail and green shared trail.

The Trails

  • The Hicks Lodge Trail, a flat and wide 2km path around the lake, is great for walkers, cyclists and even horses.
  • The Family Forest Trail (2km short loop and 4.5km long loop) takes you on an exploration across the whole site, there are some hilly bits but it’s still suitable for bikes, trikes, tagalongs, wheelchairs and pushchairs.
  • The Wood Farm Trail (2.5km) introduces cyclists to easy singletrack
  • Shell Brook Trail Blue (7km) brings on more technical features on a moderately graded singletrack which is suitable only for mountain bikes. It's a great little trail which can be treated like a (rather large and spread out) pump track. The trail has berms, rollers, tabletops, is action-packed fun for all ages and abilities.

hicks lodge is a small trail center with a nice cafe and a few different loops aimed more for beginners. the blue route is a fun loop with some fast berms and rollers. good for some fitness training. there is no big features here but you can have alot of fun and get a bit of air off the rollers!

Great fun - another reviewer said its like a drawn out pump track, which is a pretty good description. It is good fun and worth doing it fast. If you want a decent workout, go round twice. Some of the jumps are worth throwing the bike over if you're not usually confident (I'm not!). And the berms are actually good for training, again, I'm not that technical a rider, so find it helpful. A great facility for families and novices - rarely crowded, worth supporting.

Some fun features along the way. Lots of berms scattered along but I found some of them to be quite tight to get out of so a bit akward. Loads of random rollers along the way to try and jump. The final descent is really quick to get back to the top off so worth a few rides before you head back

We love hicks lodge, especially as its only 10 minutes away. Whether its a nice family afternoon with our two children (5 & 10 years) on the family trail and around the lake or a late night riding session on a Thursday night when the cafes open till 8.

The Shell brook trail is ideal to get into mountain biking and my son loves it. I wouldn't recommend tag alongs, small children or non mountain bikes on it as some sections would be difficult.

The scenery and woodlands are great and maturing all the time and as has been said you have to try the cakes out after a hard ride, it would be rude not to......
Thursday nights are great,a completely different experience doing the trail at night, dont worry as theres always lots of people on the trail with you..

Good Points
single track Shell brook trail, decent length family trail and a good playground for the kids while you have a proper cup of tea or coffee

Very family friendly

fab café

Good clean facilities (toilets etc)
Bad Points
Just a small note to watch the gravel on the family trail as little ones might find it a bit difficult on downhill sections.

There are trails for different abilities. I have used all the trails and they are well maintained and fun for all. I like it how you can do some sections of one (for example do a few bits the blue which is more advanced and some of the yellow which is easier) but mix it up with another. I also like how it is family friendly.

The Cycle Hire is reasonably priced and I have used it a couple of times, but to be honest I usually take my own bike. The price includes your helmet too and the staff always help you if you need anything adjusting like the seat. There's a shop too if you've forgotten any bits and bobs for your bike! I think you can even buy bikes there now too.

The best things about Hicks Lodge other than the trails are the scenery and the facilities. The lake is beautiful to cycle round and I have also walked round a few times with the dog or just with my pushchair. The cafe has some really yummy cakes and coffees! The lunch is good too. I find the staff friendly and helpful, which is always a must in my eyes. There is also a child's play area which is free to use. The toilets are always clean and everywhere is well maintained. Very family friendly.

A great day out and the only thing you have to pay is a small car parking charge and use some energy!

There is plenty to do, children can play on the small adventure play ground - which is clearly visible from the cafe.

Cyclist cam enjoy an easy ride round the lake to test their skills on the blue trail. Families can take a gentle ride round the yellow and green routes with options to stop off at picnic stop or benches dotted around.

A huge variety of birds for the bird watchers either round the well graveled walks or round the lake.

Brilliant cafe with awesome home made cakes and light meals - we found very reasonably priced.

Even if you don't have a bike, you can hire one, the staff are well trained and we found them very helpful.

Toilets are clean and well stocked.
