when we first arrived we werent sure where to park, there was the council building and some streets. we parked on the street near the start of the trail in the end.
once we rode up the long access road climb we loved this place. followed the red climb up and up and enjoyed the various slabs and features on the way up, had to stop and peer over into the quarry a few times! the trail has fast berms, drops and rock gardens dotted about and it doesnt ever get boring or repetitive either.
i can imagine that the more you ride here the easier it is to make up your own routes around. its like a giant playground for mountain bikers!

Fanstatic place to stay and play, or ride and explore.
Needs more investment.
Very exposed and open to the elements so go prepared!

User Review

Good Points
Great trails that stand up to the traffic and elements very well.
A fantastic place to play about and session runs, features and pump tracks. There's a good variety.
For those wanting to head out further, there is a nice red route that takes you round Lee Quarry, over to Cragg Quarry and back to Lee Quarry.
There's plenty of great trails off the quarries too, so rides can be extended for those who wish to explore.
Bad Points
There's often a meal wagon at the car park area but there's no facilities. There was talk of investment in the place and a building at the trailhead, run by the local bike shop in conjunction with the local council (Rossendale), but it's still just wasteland.
Needs proper facilities, ie secure car park, toilets, bike wash etc, to put it on par with other trail centres.

I ride Cragg more than Lee as I can ride there from my house (looping Lee in would make for a longer ride than time usually allows!).

As a inexperienced rider I find Cragg great for technical progression (swoopy bits, punchy climbs, rocks to negotiate) without being overly intimidating. It's great fun to boot.

Lee feels a bit more developed: the features are more technical, there are jumps and drops, etc. I find it tougher to ride than Cragg as a consequence, and although there is still plenty to enjoy as a novice I can see more experienced riders getting more out of Lee than I can at present!

Although these trails are local to me I would travel to ride something similar, you could certainly make a day of it with a few loops and sessioning some features.

Good Points
Lots of session-able features.
Rocky and hence dry even when the weather is poor.
Rarely very busy.
Bad Points
No trail head to speak of.
Rocky and hence a hard landing if you crash.
Wind can get high as its quite exposed.

Took the kids a few times they love sessioning the quarry

User Review

Good Points
Really good place to session and develop skills particularly good for kids with loads of routs through the quarries. Trail back from Crag quarry really fast and flowwy
Bad Points
Same trail used between Lee and Cragg would like a circular between the 2. Can be bleak in bad weather and signage isn't great

Big stoney playground!

User Review

Good Points
Always a different day out and leaves you wanting more. Reminds me of a giant version of the old mining slag heaps i used to play about on as a boy!

The short downhills in the skills section are fun to session and combined with a tour of Cragg Quarry make it a worthy day out. I'm keen to check out some of the other local routes on my next visit.

Lots of stone meaning the trail generally stands up to bad weather well.
Bad Points
It can be grim when the weathers bad - at least compared to a forest or even my local moorland! Signage could be improved especially for first timers...

Few people have mentioned lack of facilities. Not a big issue for me as i only live 30-40mins away. If you were travelling further, and its your thing, you might miss a cafe, bike shop, bike wash etc.

It's tough, the learning curve is steep, and it punishes the unfit. The costs of a mistake up there can be severe.
When all said and done, riding up there makes you a better rider.

User Review

Good Points
Make no mistake, this place is tough. A lungbusting climb just to get from the carpark to the trail. It does make you fit if you do it regularly though.
The trail is a mix of super tough technical climbs and fast flowey downs. If you can keep your momentum up the rewards are awesome. Once you get the bug it becomes addictive like no other trail centre. If you're not sure of the route ask, it's how I learned the trail and i'll happily change up my ride to show a newbie round.
Bad Points
The biggest problem this trail has is a lack of riders, get up there, there are challenges for everyone.
Next thing the trail needs is regular maintenance, and for that it needs more riders.
Lastly, there are no facilities to speak of, no car park charges either. A butty van is usually in the carpark and the local pubs and cafes are friendly to bikers, but you should be prepared to be self sufficient.

The trails here really push you, and there are loads of areas to session and improve skills.
Cragg is also great and the cross moors link road with kickers is worth the pedal up.

Most fun you can have with your clothes on

User Review

Good Points
Good if your limited with time, that's not to say you couldn't spend all day there, you can easily session your favourite sections to build your skills, hit the pump tracks, table tops or drop offs.

Can easily be joined with cragg quarry if you're making a day of it and the link path between the quarrys is fun.

Meal machine is usually there at weekends and the do a mean bacon butty :)
Bad Points
Hurts when you fall off, lid and gloves mandatory, probably wise to wear additional protection!

There is a decent food van at the base of Lee Quarry!

User Review

Good Points
The location is fantastic- great views. The trails are very technical and challenging. If you come regularly you will learn new skills and be a much better rider. It is also varied terrain. And it is free and not crowded at all.
Bad Points
Getting up is hard work (but worth it!). Some of the uphill is loose which means a lack of grip. Signage isn't great. It gets very windy.

But you have to give this place a try if you get chance. Very different to "normal" single track places and that makes it interesting.
