Thetford forest is on the border of Norfolk and Suffolk and offers a range of mountain bike trails from Green, Blue and Red as well as a pump track.

It also has a pretty well kitted out bike shop (Bike Art) which does cycle hire as well as a Visitors Centre with a cafe.

In May 2016 they added a bunch of new sections to the existing trail network i.e The start of the Shepherd Trail, as well as the central section of the Lime Burner. In March 2017 the new pump track opened.

Lime Burner Trail (Red)

  • The Lime Burner is a 16km Red graded trail. The tracks are broken up every few miles by a number of ditch like bomb holes with short descents and exits. The first one has both a number of entry and exit lines including rooty drops and one with a fast shoot exit that propels you out into the air with a forgiving sandpit like finish. The technical challenge is left till near the end when you enter the Beast section packed with winding rooty dips alternating corners and berms in a flowing style. There are also some neat new rock sections added in Nov 2015 and a central section in May 2016.

Beater Trail (Blue)

  • The Blue graded Beater Trail is a 18km trail that is mainly single-track winding between the trees.

Poacher Trail (Blue)

  • The Poacher Trail is a moderate graded Blue 16km trail. The Poacher Trail is located in Brandon Country Park. This loop can be linked with the High Lodge Shepherd Trail to lengthen the trails.

Shepherd Trail (Green)

  • The Shepherd trail is an 8km Green graded for families and beginners

Pump Track

  • A small pump track for progressive skill development.

Other Stuff

  • Red trails are not suitable / recommended for children under the age of 12

Good Points
Great for kids starting out, nice forest.
I see a lot of people moan about the parking prices. But ask yourself this, where else are you going to have a day out for less that what it costs to park? If you go to the cinema as a family your looking at £70+ to sit in for an hour and a half stuffing your face with a £10 pick n mix. So for me £10 parking for a family day out in the forest is very reasonable
Bad Points
Red trail is very deceiving, compare it to trails up and down the country you would grad it Blue, Swinley Blue is more challenging than Thetfords red. It’s ok for a poodle around. A lot of pedestrians on the trails, that’s fine you get that sometimes. But here more than anywhere else. Some sections have not been thought out very well, it’s poorly signed. For a family this is a decent trail for introducing kids, I went with my nephews who usually just ride scooters and they found these trails easy and enjoyed them. So thumbs up for that. But if you want something with a bit more about it, travel further afield. If your used to riding proper red and black trails, and expect to ride a red at Thetford you will be dispointed

I have seen parties of schoolchildren riding the trails not sure what they think so would not recommend or encourage this at the moment. Sorry.

User Review

Bad Points
If intending to ride Limeburner or beater trails carry a machete or other sharp implement as parts are impassable due to overgrown nettles and ferns and have only been cut where vehicle access is possible.

Good Points
Great place to train yourself up if you're not sure of your skills or you want to ride with someone who isn't. Family friendly, beautiful environment. I have put a relatively high grin factor because the trails are well maintained and the surroundings are so pleasant, not for reasons linked to gravity (although there are some fun bombholes that were apparently actually made by bombs :).
Bad Points
Parking costs way too much. The trail grades are really overstated, to my mind. But I guess they have to cover themselves.

Good Points
Great fun
Craters to anyone who isn't a quality rider
I learnt here and everything I need is there
Bad Points
Car parking can be expensve, if you rent bikes or buy something from the shop you get a free parking ticket, if you have your own bike you can park in the fireroads/other car parks. High lodge is not essential everytime.
Not much for really good riders to push themselves on, but my riding buddies are good and go 3 times a week without complaining much

Thetford has got better with the rock gardens and new style pump tracks, a little more investment and concentratition on black graded routes and it could be really good

User Review

Good Points
Plenty of miles
Bad Points
Not enough up to date trails.

Berms, jumps, tabletops and flowing tracks.

Some black graded runs with drop offs and more technical sections would be great.

Thetford is too XC focuses and would be great to cater for dirt bikes and Enduro riding.

Great fun, will be going back - to improve times.

Good Points
A mix of fast slopes, craters, a new speed trail..around 18km of great fun to be had. Some of the stretches are strava segments too..so easy to compare to others.
Bad Points
One of the "slow down" speed calming barriers it too close to the end of the new speed trail at the end of the lime burner..literally did slow me down dead - as it hit it at 15 - 20 km..

Not a bad little place at all, just as long as your not expecting mountains.
