Guided Mountain Bike Rides, Route Guides and Skills Training

in North Wales and the North West of England

by Colin Down, a mountain biker with over 14 years of experience in the hills and mountains.

Having produced a large resource of free online Route Guides, a resource that I am constantly improving and expanding, I have extensive knowledge of the trails around North Wales and the North West of England. My years of experiencing riding and guiding in the hills and mountains are also complemented with TCL, MBL and Night Riding Mountain Bike Leader Awards. I am also qualified as an Adapitve MTB Leader through Challenge Your Boundaries and have experience leading disabled riders on their 'Hand Bikes at Dawn' events

Guided Rides

Ride without wasting time on navigation, free to enjoy all your riding time on great trails in stunning scenery. Safe in the knowledge I’m a qualified REC 1st Aider with an extensive knowledge of trail side repairs, so should you or your bike come to grief I’ve got you covered!

You can ride with me on my Free Guided Rides. These are free monthly Sunday rides aimed at a level 'Social' and weekly Night Rides in the North Wales hills.

I am also a guide available for hire, producing rides tailored to suit your needs on my Bespoke Guided MTB Rides. All types of rider are catered for from gentle family tours to all day epics in the hills and mountains. Some skills training, trail side repairs and basic map reading skills can be included on request.

These rides cover the full range of my route guides, which span North Wales and North West England, some of which can be seen on my Flattyres-MTB YouTube channel.

Training

Get the most out of your riding with a Flattyres-MTB Skills Training session.  Learn the essential trail riding skills with an MBLA qualified instructor to improving riding your skills, which will allow you to:

  • Conquer technical challenges
  • Ride faster but in more control
  • Conserve energy and ride for longer
  • Ride safely while having more fun

Whatever your level, be it complete beginner or experienced rider, I have a course to improve your skills. Each training session is designed to give a complete set of skills to take you to the next level, learning in a friendly atmosphere with riders of a similar level. My complete package of courses will give you all the skills required to tackle anything out on the trail.

All courses are based on the Clwydian Range in North Wales.

Route Guides

I have produced over 70 MTB Route Guides, covering North Wales and the North West of England.  These routes include comprehensive text descriptions, pictures, Grid Refs and GPS files (all physically logged on actual rides) and an increasing number of videos.

While the routes are mainly Intermediate and Expert level, there are an increasing number of beginners routes, and many of the routes overlap so you can 'mix & match'.

If you want to try something really big there are full details of my four day Flattyres-MTB North Wales Coast to Coast.

Good Points
I booked a guided ride with Colin whilst I was away on holiday. I went expecting to have a good day on the bike riding some natural terrain away from the Coed Y Brenin trail centre which was nearby to where I was staying, but I actually got an amazing top quality ride that I will remember for a long time. When we met up and after a quick discussion Colin thought that the original ride we had agreed on was alright but I might enjoy something else instead, possibly more in tune to my riding. So we agreed to change the plans and ride a Pont Scethin route. What a great decision! A couple of tough climbs were well rewarded by some of the best natural downhills I have ever ridden, and a cheeky loop around a small wooded area thrown in for good measure. You know you have had a good ride when you cant remove that massive smile on your face at the end of the day!
Colin is a great bloke, very professional, knowledgeable, polite, and we had plenty to chat about all day. He took some great photos of me riding along the route too which was an unexpected but welcome surprise. And another bonus amongst all of this is that his prices are excellent - even for a single rider like me rather than being with a group. Was a great experience, and i am looking forward to trying to ride with him again in the future.
Highly recommended indeed!

Good Points
I booked a days Technical training with Colin for my husband and I, predominantly for me to gain some confidence in advance of a ride we are training for this Summer. What a valuable and enjoyable experience in such a beautiful location in North Wales! My husband has been riding confidently for over 10 years and recognised he had picked up some bad habits, Colin explained and demonstrated correct techniques which resulted in immediate improvements. As for me, Colin was able to explain the basic technical skills required to build my confidence and be able to pick my speed up. We were given plenty of time to practice and repeat the skills including braking, cornering, descending, manuals etc. We can't recommend this training enough, it's well worth investing in!

Good Points
This is not my first experience of MTB coaching, but Colin took my knowledge and skills to a higher level. I learned with a lot more precision how each element of my body posture is relevant to performance and this really built my confidence. We had a lot of fun during our day, and at the same time Colin was totally serious about making sure that each one of us grasped the relevant concepts in our own way, so that we were ready to practice these in our own time. An excellent and enjoyable day of coaching.

I have used Colin's website on numerous occasions for route information and every time the information has been accurate and informative.
The routes are graded well with advice on refreshment stops and points of interest.
Over the years I have ridden most of the routes that Colin has placed on his website and I would not hesitate to recommend the site to any one wanting MTB route information.

<div>Colin is very patient and a great coach. His method of coaching is great. He takes his time, slowly builds your knowledge and then develops your skills throughout the training day. He gives plenty of one on one guidance and the location he uses make for the ideal place to develop skills and have a great day on the bike. The skills Colin has given me have been put to good use and my confidence has grown immensely since the training session. I now ride with more confidence and technical ability which has made me not only faster but also safer when out riding. It's made me enjoy my riding a whole lot more and I couldn't recommend it enough.</div>

<div>Been out with Colin on numerous rides in 2015, most recently on one of his routes in the Lake District and had what I can only describe as an absolute blast!<br />The weather was horrendous and yet he always managed to have a smile on his face and be nothing but positive about what lay ahead, his enthusiasm always seems to rub off on you turning a potentially disastrous day into probably the best day out on a mountain bike i've had in many years.<br />His route, skills and mechanical knowledge are second to none and whatever your level on a bike I can guarantee you will have a great day out.</div>

Good Points
What a great guy Colin is! Our day cost us a tiny £20 each as Colin had very kindly donated a days coaching to the girls only mountain biking event 'Girls at Moelfre' raising money for Cancer Research.
Colin contacted me to try and find out where we would like to ride and what skills we would like to improve on. He came up with a route around the Ceiriog Valley in North Wales which was fantastic and gave us plenty of opportunity to practice on steep Rocky sections which is as what we had asked for. He spent lots of time with us all making sure we were all riding in the best position and braking in the most effective way. We were out for around 6 hours and learnt a huge amount! He didn't make us feel stupid for not always quite understanding what he was teachng us to suck eggs. He assessed our ability and gave us excellent and valuable advice. Definitely would recommend Colin to anybody looking to improve their skills on the trails! Great guy!!-

Colin is very knowledgeable in all areas of mountain biking with a patient and calm approach. He also works on your individual skill requirements, i.e. if you've been biking for years compared to a new rider. Even though I've been mountain biking for over 5 years and ridden many different types of trails, including most of Wales trail centres, I've still learnt new skills to improve my technique which have helped immensely.
I hope to follow this up with the climbing and descending course at some stage.
The course was really good value.

I first met Colin when I joined others on one of his Skills Training Sessions, which are excellent and can really take your riding to the next level. I've also had the experience of being guided by Colin on a number of his MTB Guided Routes and I have to say everyone always finishes the day with a BIG smile on their face! Colin has a variety of routes to suit all skill & fitness levels and you always feel that your in safe hands. Colin has great knowledge of the areas, excellent advice on bike skills, bike mechanics and the re-assurance of first aid "that I hope I'll never need". With over 70 MTB Route Guides I've created my own bucket list of Colin's rides and hope to tick many of my list in the years to come. Highly Recommended!!!
