If you're looking for an absolutely affordable and well organized bike trip with lots of riding fun and amazing tracks this holiday is perfect!
Communication with Brett and organization, such as pick-up/drop-off at the airport, went smoothly. The location at Jo and Brett's is nice and comfy. Both are very relaxed and welcoming. Breakfast and dinner were good. You'll definitely not go riding hungry!
We had lots of fun on the various tracks which have flowy parts and jumps as well as steeper and technical parts. Most of them were really dusty. It was a great riding experience though.
All in all we had a very good time!

Good Points
Where to start? I guess the first thing to point out is how kind and friendly the whole of the wheeler household/family are. Upon arrival at Lisbon Airport we were given a warm welcome by Brett, and driven straight to the vila in Foz De Arouce, a small village in the outskirts of Lousa. Once at the villa, we were welcomed once again, by Jo (Mrs Wheeler) and Diogo (Jo's cousin) and left to sort our kit out and make ourselves at home in our rooms. The atmosphere at the villa was very relaxed, it was almost as if we were visiting friends or family; on the nights the whole of the Wheeler clan were happy to chill out with the guests and watch TV, have a chat, watch the day's Go-Pro footage, or whatever took our group's fancy!
Once we had found our feet at the villa and settled in, we had our first meal of the holiday. This was the best bit; the food was to die for. Every evening meal was cooked entirely from fresh ingredients, and not only was always delicious and cooked perfectly, but was also guaranteed to fill you for a big day of riding on some of the most amazing tracks in some of the most varied terrain in Europe! Breakfast was also always filling, and had lots of choice, including croissants from the local bakery (amazing), cereal, toast, unlimited coffee, tea, and fruit juice, yoghurt, and if in need of a kickstart to the morning, some seriously strong Espresso from the Espresso machine, which works wonders when heading out in search of the steep s,,t!
The riding is absolutely awesome in Lousa. The tracks are so varied in both terrain and challenge that it is guaranteed to be a hit with everyone, from novice to pro racer (we rode with a couple including none other than Matt Simmonds who just happened to be staying in the area for training over the winter period). There's all kinds of riding on offer, from loam to sand to rock, from steep and tech to fast flow jump tracks. Brett always gives plenty of guidance to all riders before letting them go full tilt at the tracks, and is fast enough to challenge even the fastest of guests to match his pace, yet is always willing to spend time with less confident riders to help them conquer the more challenging sections of track that lie on the more testing locations such as the old National track at Vila Nova, and Impossible at Lousa. There are plenty of locations to keep guests busy for the full duration of the week, and every rider within the group is guaranteed to have their favourite, mine being the Avalanche track that descends from Portugal's second highest point, and includes some seriously cool views.
Cost of the holiday was also great! Accommodation, flights, food and insurance for the riding inclusive, the holiday cost each of us no more than £500. For the same type of holiday in the Alps you would easily be looking at spending twice the price, and that's without the knowledge of a local rider who can show you the best bits of the area. Local restaurants for your lunch break are always cheap and never cost more than €8, and always hit the spot, with plenty of choice and huge portion sizes.
The local community is also very closely knit, with some of the local restaurant staff members being regular DH riders. It's a pretty big novelty to be served with mixed grill and chips by one of the local chaps, before riding with the same person no more than an hour after!
Also, big thumbs up to Joao (Jotta) the uplift driver. He's an absolutely awesome bloke. Cool as a cucumber, but is always up for a bit of banter with the guests and is a seriously rad uplift driver, who loves to get his drift on!
Suffice to say that after only being back home for 4 hours maximum, there's already been talk about getting our names down for a second trip this year before 2015 is out!
Thanks for an awesome holiday guys, we will be back very soon!

Had to come home! Reckon the lads would have stowed away under the minibus back to the villa at the airport departures if Brett hadn't have been on the ball...

Where do i begin!
The best downhill tracks i have ever ridden, they really push you to your true riding potential.
Amazing food cooked by Jo for dinner every night.
Everyone at the Villa are such lovely people, very friendly and welcoming including Oakley, Millie, Bubbles, Snickers, Portuguese and English Midnight!

Such an amazing villa that you stay in with a pool and hot tub which really help after a long days riding!
Extremely good value for money with the transfers, uplift and all the food that Jo cooks for you included in the price, you will never be hungry that's for sure!

I will definitely be back to Wheelers Mountain Bike Holidays.
And will be recommending it to my friends.

Thanks for such an amazing holiday!

From the moment you land at the airport till you are dropped back off everything is taken care of.
The villa is amazing and has everything you could ever need to make your holiday perfect. Theres a pool a hot tub a workshop, washing facilities for those dirty riding days and excellent rooms.
The trails are brilliant and cater for every type of riding and offer loads of variety. The uplifts are great and give you loads of riding time. Brett is a great bloke and riding with him was amazing and he would do anything to help.
The breakfasts and evening meals prepared by Jo were plentyful and tasted amazing and nothing was too much trouble.
This holiday felt more like visiting friends than being with people youd never met before.
I cant recommend this holiday enough, you wont get a better experience.
Would really like to thank Brett and Jo for an awesome week and hope to visit again next year.

Make sure you book well in advance for this trip, Wheelers is only a small business and its quickly becoming a renowned destination so there aren't many spaces left for 2015 already (3/1/15). So stop fretting and get on and book!

Good Points
As an 18 year old travelling with my younger 16 year old brother, we were on the lookout for a cheap riding get away on a budget. The value of Wheelers is currently unbeatable which made this the first choice over other destinations such as Malaga. But what really surprised me was how much you get for your money; 7 days of sweet guided riding, a beautiful villa, massive home cooked meals enough to feed a small army, and transfers. The only extra costs to us were the flights and the insurance, bringing the max cost to only £550 which thinking back on it is an amazing deal. Being the cheapest guided holiday on the market I was concerned it would be a lower standard of trail to the rival destinations, however I was blown away by the variety and quantity of trails which were all well thought out. The other guests who had been on numerous holidays across Europe said that it was amungst the best riding they've experienced, I can only speak for myself as a less well traveled rider and the trails were awesome! Every track had a very unique character and you certainly won't get bored! My personal favorites were at the top of Lousa mountain where the trails were the fastest, and also the national track over at Vila Nova. You can check out some videos on our pinkbike which will go up in a few days. The uplift was very efficient, one day we manage 11 laps of the national track and another we managed 9 including the 45 minute avalanche track, so you get a hell of a lot of riding time! (average 9 per day at Lousa). All the tracks run down into Lousa and surrounding villages which meant it was easy to make repairs at the local bike shop, and also efficiently ride to your lunch break without having to drive far. You are likely to leave this holiday fatter than you arrived despite the riding being pretty knackering. Jo's cooking is top notch and you can eat until you can't move, so much is served up I can't imagine it ever all gets eaten! Same goes for the local restaurants which Brett is friendly with all the owners meaning a cheap set price for an all you can eat bbq grill in most cases. I spent around 40 euro on food in the week and I certainly got my money worth! Hospitality in general was very good, it felt like we were visiting friends and we got comfortable with the daily life very quickly. On new years eve there was champagne and were were taken out to a local party which made the holiday feel unique to us. If you're deciding between destinations to choose for your next trip I urge you to choose wheelers simply for the; awesome trails, unbeatable value and personal touches.
Bad Points
You want to be fairly confident on steeps and technical sections. As southern Englanders with little experience on this kind of terrain we struggled a fair amount despite being fairly advanced riders at home. However Brett is a very good coach and trail guide so he will teach/help you get down the trails and not push you too hard so I wouldn't worry too much.

Great service from the wheeler gang. Food ,trails and accommodation are spot on. Sun shine in the winter. With so many types of terrain and style of track to keep all levels of rider ability happy . As much fruit in and around the house i could eat. To keep me energised . Dinner time jo whips up some great meals to refuel .followed by a mountain of breakfast treats to keep you going all day on the hill. Was great to get away from the cold winter. Here in the UK. Look fwd to a return visit. Cheers guys.

Hey there,

I've been speding the first week in January 2015 in Brett's accomodation incl. downhill riding. Every year, I go to south Europe to prepare myself for the downhill-season, this year it was the first time for me in Portugal.
What I found here was different, the tracks are not as rocky as e.g. Sanremo or Malaga, yet some of the trails are really challenging mainly because of the steepness. Some tracks have even huge built jumps, making the area around Lousa the perfect playground to prepare for world cups.
Nevertheless, at all the big jumps you can find chicken ways making it rideable for the vast majority of riders, and there are so many tracks that nearly every downhill-mountainbiker will have great fun there!
Brett and his wife accomodate you their villa, and Brett does the guiding. For the racers among you, you can just pin it riding behind him until youn know the track, he is one of the fast guys, and for customers who are not so fast, he gives precious hints how to improve their riding.
In the end, everybody from nearly-rookie over weekend-warrior to top-pro-Worldcup-racer can improve his riding there. We even met some top-10-worldcuppers there (we were even riding with them).
The area aroud Lousa is absolutely great, the trails are all in a really good condition since it is not as overrun as most other DH-tracks.
During the week we were there, we didn't encounter one single day of rain.
The journey there is an incredible value, anywhere else you pay twice as much.

If you are planning to go there for riding, you won't regret - make sure you book early enough, they are booked out pretty quick. For a good reason.
