Ae mountain bike trail centre is part of the 7stanes network up in Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland. The Ae mountain bike trails cater for all abilities from families, to technical MTB trail riders through to great runs for an already long established downhill community. It now has a bike café and a bike shop that does bike hire and servicing.

Each of the trails caters specifically for each rider ability level to the utmost. So the reds are technically intense and up a grade from most of its colour peers and the downhill trails earn their Orange badge being competition level status.

Likewise, the green and blues closer down in the valley offer a great family adventure.

They have five trails:

Green

  • The Ae Valley route for families (9km long)

Blue

  • The Larch View route with more of a forest feel (13.5km)

Red

  • The Ae Line – Technical with a famous Omega Man descent full of drops and jumps. See video below. (24km)

Orange Graded Downhill

  • Shredder – Great for newbies to downhill (1km)
  • AE Downhill- Rocky and gnarly (1.6km)  and includes the infamous 22 ft Coffin Jump. This is a competition level course.

Natural

  • There are considerable natural trails on offer.

Ae MTB Trails

Always worth a visit. Friendly helpful staff in the shop and great food in the cafe.

User Review

Good Points
Great variety of trails from beginner all the way to advanced downhill and natural. Super friendly staff and owners of the cafe and shop. Great night riding group during the winter and summer months. Mabie used to be my "home" trail when I stayed in Dumfries but moving out to the sticks and being nearer to Ae i started visiting Ae more regularly. The place is superb. It's got so much variety.
Bad Points
None to be honest. Like most trails it could do with some TLC as it's been a while since it was all laid down. If I was being picky then a pump park / kids skill park area would really benefit the place.

Ae 7 Stanes

Always worth a visit.

User Review

Good Points
Ae offers a great mixture of trails. The Ae Line red trail offers a decent mixture of single track with some great downhill sections along with decent climbs. The green and blue routes are very family friendly and are well used at the weekends. Also on offer are the downhill runs as well as many natural trails. National Cycle route 10 also goes through the heart of the forest and offers a longer more scenic ride. In addition there are routes which you can ride up the side of Queensberry the highest hill in D&G. On top of this the cafe is excellent and Callum in the bike shop offers a great service.
Bad Points
As has been already mentioned the red has a few hard climbs so fitness is a must. The red trails are a bit washed out here and there but hopefully the worst bits will be looked at soon.

All day long trails

the red route might be just 11 miles long but last weekend I rode 43 miles on natural, red and fire road trails. Cracking baked spud and a cake after too. excellent day out!

User Review

Good Points
from the natural trails, graded trails and routes and the older fire road trails that take you way out the back of the forest and into the hills beyond Ae its impossible to get bored at Ae forest. The cafe is great, really good food, great facility with showers if needed and a bike shop on site with the ever helpful and knowledgeable Callum etc
Bad Points
none really

Downhill lines and off piste are where the best trails are at, would recommend advanced riders.

User Review

Good Points
Great place to ride. Large variety of trails from a decent xc red route to a cracking downhill course with loads of optional lines and sections. Excellent off piste/unmarked trails catering for the more enduro style rider, natural, steep and technical. Great facilities, great shop and cafe, highly recommend.
Bad Points
xc trail could use some work.

Good fun Red Route

First Time At AE trails and did the red route. First off to do the red route you need a bit of base fitness otherwise might feel a slog, im by no means fit but fit enough. If your after a XC training day with some trails, this couldn't be better. I would say im comfy on red trails, black i keich myself(for reference). Overall a great day out and a bit different from my usual,

of the trail sections

"green granny love" is pretty mild, swooping through woodlands, one big slab i didnt see coming and didnt make it over, will try next time
"The Face" was fun, although bone crunching switch backs(well was for my 100mm hardtail) - want another crack at that
"Bran bash" was fast and fun, simples
"the edge"I think was my favourite, technical enough for me with some berms, small drops winding all the way down, even some roots in there - great fun
"nil desperadum" / top half of "omega man" - was good but tough as i need to get my fitness up to pedal through all of it, but the downs were rocky and great fun to blas through
"omega man lower" good fun but did not do it justice..... might be fun to start here before doing a whole red route!

didnt do shredder but sounds fun for the full downhillers

User Review

Good Points
Something for everyone
not as busy as other 7 stanes trail centres
Good Variety
Bad Points
....wish Omega man was at the start when im not knackered
not clear on the route for final red descent into omega man(sign saying no riding.... but thats the way)
....... coffee shop was almost as slow as mabie's coffee shop..... my god people how long does a coffee take

Best red route in southern Scotland

Of all the 7 stanes rides, the AE line is 2nd only to the Black route at Kirroughtree. This ride flows from start to finish and has many highlights such as turbine ally and the omega man.Although I'm not a fan of wind turblines they do add some character to the ride.

Ae Grade Mountain Bike Trails

The red graded trail here seems as though it is going through a sort of transition phase- there is some great well-established singletrack but the new stuff, although of excellent construction and design, sort of feels a bit out of place right now. Perhaps once trees grow up around them and they become roughened around the edges from bike traffic a more natural effect might be achieved. Some of the track by the wind farm is partly made from crushed brick which gives a city cycle lane feel, until you come up against some massive dirt jumps on the most exposed part of the hill. A warning of possible side winds needs to be heeded here to prevent an accident.

I never rode this trail before the diversion was put in place so cannot comment on what has been lost from the ride. All in all it is a great technical track: four main climbs are matched with four great descents, all of varying character. It would be a decent measure of biking skill for a rider to get round without dabbing down.

For those who say there is too much fireroad climbing, this is not the case- of course if you are unfit or not used to biking, these will take up a chunk of your ride and feel like a real drag. My other half (female) got round the route as it is now in under an hour and 3/4 so there are no excuses lads!

The blue trail would be a great introduction to riding- once the first long climb has been done. A brilliant new section of track has been constructed with large wide berms, and can also be enjoyed by those who are comfortable riding at great speed. The track joins the green for a pleasant ride up the valley floor before turning down dale on wide easy singletrack winding through trees back to the end.

I'd go as far as to say this is possibly the most family friendly centre i've been to, thanks to the nature of the easy graded trails and the fact it isn't uncomfortably busy like some of the other Stanes, which might put off the less confident rider.

Ae Forest

Ae is one of my favorites of all the 7 stanes and I find is often underrated. The red Ae line trail is hard going at times and is a good test of fitness with some epic climbs and great descents. The new addition of the windfarm trails are good fun with some massive berms and steep tabletops. As well as the graded trails there is a good selection of downhill courses for the more extreme riders and also boosts a beginners downhill course called the shredder to help build you confidence up. Also an added bonus is the newly reopened Ae cafe and bike shop run by a very friendly local family with a great selection of reasonably priced food and cakes. The main thing I love about this trails is apart from summer weekends this Stane is often not very busy and very often can do the whole route and not meet sole.
