Laggan Wolftrax mountain bike trails are in Strathmashie Forest, in the Scottish Highlands. On offer here is a 5km Green trail, a 15km Red trail, a 6.4km intense Black trail and an Orange graded Bike Park.

A Forest Visitors Centre opened at Laggan Wolftrax in April 2015.

The centre includes a cafe, toilets, showers and an office.

The Wolftrax Green

  • The 4.8km Green trail is actually enjoyed by riders of all abilities as it has real tree lined singletrack in it. It is though clearly focused on novices and young children. It runs between the Laggan Wolftrax hub and the community-owned Gorstean car park.

The Wolftrax Red

  • The 15km Red graded trail starts just past the Bike Park. It is made up of two sections, the Upper Red Route and the Lower Red Trail.
  • The Upper Red Route section shares the climb with the Black trail and then adds it's own fast descent with optional features. The Lower Red Trail section has a multitude of features. It is on narrow black shale with embedded rock obstacles, drop-offs, rock causeways, boardwalk and lots of tough little technical climbs. It is renowned for features such as the challenging Air’s Rock, a slab similar to 'The Slab' at Dalbeattie, and the natural rock features of the Bhadain Boulder Field.

The Wolftrax Black

  • The black route is 6.4km of very tight, very technical, single-track with big drop offs, boulder fields, rock steps and rock slabs. It's built for the rider that is ready to commit! Renowned features include the "2 Ton Drop" and the "Back, Sack and Crack Attack" (a  triple rock slab feature). There is also the Devil’s Chessboard, a 40-metre rock slab staircase with 24 different levels. NB This trail is actually much longer as it includes at least half the Red.

The Wolftrax Bike Park (Orange)

  • The Bike Park has 3.6km of Orange graded trail. The track is wide with a sealed-surface featuring big berms, tabletops and gap jumps. Novices can still ride it as it is all rollable. It is built with progression in mind up from the novice to the advanced rider.

Still the best center in Scotland

Great day out, we'll worth the 2.5 hours drive out for me and my friends to do a single day ride.

No uplift but isn't much of a climb so multiple laps are more than possible.

Some of the best slabs around...

Dirt road almost up to top, little technical uphill and then grinning all the way down.

Good Points
One of the best spots in Scotland we've ever gone. Very progressive riding. Make sure you do upper red few times before you head down as it's a tad better than lower. Beautiful scenery and black sections are proper black.
Bad Points
It's miles away from me. Cafe is a bit overpriced compared to normally good value in Scotland (still not south prices tho)

Gem!

I came across Laggan Wolftrax by mistake, thought I'd stop and gave a look, I'm not a peddler, prefer downhill, but the blue was so good I did it twice. Tastefully manmade to be as near natural as possible, it was fab.

Good Points
Trails are so rewarding regardless of experience. If you don't have a grin on your face at the end then you should find another hobby! Cafe serves good quality cakes and coffee to refresh you so you can go again! Can't wait to go back again!
Bad Points
Orange trails need a bit of TLC when there last

Rocky, jumpy, fun

Excellent for more experienced riders, not so much for skills progression

User Review

Good Points
The trails are a great mix of flowy, rocky and quick. The reds are challenging but leave you feeling incredibly accomplished and the orange jump line is nicely built to let you gradually build up your jumping.
New cafe was nice to see too.
Definitely one of my 'I want to go back tomorrow' trail centres
Bad Points
No blue trail so unless you're quite experienced it's difficult to progress from the gentle green to the rocky, droppy red and black.
Skills area is very small
Trail variety a tad lacking

I love the variety of grades, since it means my husband can enjoy the black and red courses, I can have an exciting time as well.
Great facilities, bike wash, parking, cafe , toilets and showers.

Good Points
The lower section of the Orange is very exciting, I'm planning in having a go on the top section as well during my next two week trip to The Highlands in September 2017. My comments are based on riding a recumbent trike around the routes. Visited in Sept 2015, & 2016.
Bad Points
There in no blue graded trail.
The Green trails has good points, but the down hill section is very narrow, with no choice on the best approach to the next feature. I ride an ICE Adventure HD recumbent trike, which is 39" ( one meter wide), hence my need for a wider trail
