Dunkeld mountain bike riding is about both natural XC/AM trail terrain and Downhill tracks. It is located in Strathtay, in Perth and Kinross, in North Scotland. Access is dead easy as Dunkeld is right by the A9, and has a train station.

Plenty of parking but its free if you park at the Progression Bikes right by the river.

Progression Bikes have recently invested in a new vehicle and trailer for the Downhill coming the start of November 2013. Capacity raises to 15 people and you can watch your helmet cam footage on the big screen on the way back up.

Dunkeld used to be about the XC loop around Glen Garr, tackling Birnam Hill with its steep climbs and fine descents, blasting round the Hermitage or taking in a more relaxed Loop around Loch Ordie.

But in the last year there has been a development of new trails all off the beaten track. Some were identified for the Enduro which took place mid 2013, but there are plenty of sweet singletrack rides if you know where to look.

There are also serious Downhill tracks here in the Craigvinean forest which has some of the steepest rockiest terrain for mountain biking there is. Dunkeld is on the SDA national circuit and has hosted the National Champs

So this is Dunkeld. As always we seek to bring you the best resources out there we can find:

EveryTrail

  • This has about 5-6 suggested mountain bike routes (few are duplicates) in either GPS or KML format.
  • These include familiar routes around Loch Ordie, Loops from Dunkeld around Birnam and Bankfoot and the MTB downhill track at Dunkeld amongst others.

Strava

  • Dunkelds best trail are now being ridden using Strava. Tumbling times and new routes are appearing all the time with Progression Bikes leading the way showcasing new routes. Its a great way to find the new trails, or ride existing trails in a new direction or with new purpose.

DMBINS

  • The developing Mountain Biking in Scotland site has a whole host of useful downloadable route cards for the highlands Perthshire region covering easy, moderate, difficult and very difficult routes.

Progression Bikes

  • These folks organise uplifts and have been instrumental in driving the Downhill scene here. Based in the Craigvinean forest near Dunkeld next to the Hermitage are 2 Downhill tracks with routes, rocks and drops and an awesome reputation. These folks also have a useful trail section, and links to Stava, Everytrail and pdf maps
  • For route advice their staff know where the good stuff is and run guided trips on all the best bits.
  • Plenty of bikes to hire both hardtails and full sus from Lapierre, Ghost and Nukeproof

TrailScotland

  • This has a good section for this region of North Scotland which covers Dunkeld but also the nearby Pitlochry and Ballater areas. The descriptions are good but there are no maps.
  • It covers a good selection of beginner graded routes e.g. there is the 22km route from Dunkeld to Loch Ordie, the 17 km Little Glenshee route, the very scenic easy 22.5km Glen Garr and the open fire track 19km Craigvinean Forest route.
  • They also list on the more technically difficult grade the steep mountainous and rocky 6km Birnam Hill route.

Share

  • If you have ridden any of the trails or tracks in or around Dunkeld then why not share your experiences with us and leave us a short review or add your pics or vids to the listing.

There is an all day ride that takes in 7 descents of varying lengths but packed full of smiles per miles.

3 were part of the Enduro but were, and still are, existing outside of it.

1 is at the North end of Craigvinean

1) Lovers Leap
2) East Point
3) Cave Pass
4) Newtyle
5) Birnam Hill
6) Craigvinean DH
7) Forest Trail

Good Points
All the descents are fast, singletrack, rocky and rooty. Twisting turns and technical sections best ridden on all mountain bikes
Bad Points
Hard to find them without a map so best pop in to Progression Bikes to ask about route advice.

Even with a map some are intentionally well hidden to avoid over use and incorrect use!
