Hells Hole
Hells Hole is a short, roughly 3km loop in Wauchope Forest on the Scottish Borders, comprising mostly forest road with one short singletrack descent through the woods. There's a small car park with a picnic bench right on the B6357. Local knowledge has it that the name Hells Hole referred to a deep and dangerous pool that used to be in the nearby Catlee Burn.

The Trails
- A steady climb up the forest road brings you to a short, swoopy singletrack descent through the trees. Keep an eye out for the old quarry alongside the track.
- The trail is ungraded and unwaymarked, so download a route or use GPS navigation before you set off.
- Hells Hole pairs well with a visit to the nearby 7stanes trail centre at Newcastleton, or the trails at Kielder Forest, both a short drive away.
Getting Here
Hells Hole car park sits on the B6357 at the first access point into Wauchope Forest, about two miles south of Bonchester Bridge towards Newcastleton.
- From the south: leave the M6 at Junction 44 and take the A7 towards Canonbie, joining the B6357. Follow this for around 40 minutes and Hells Hole is on your left.
- From the north: head south on the A68 to Jedburgh, then take the B6357 south for around 15 minutes. Hells Hole is on your right.
- Wauchope Forest is managed by Forestry and Land Scotland. Trails here are subject to periodic closures and diversions due to forestry operations, so check the Wauchope Forest visitor page for current alerts before travelling.
