The Whitelee mountain bike trails are located at Whitelee Windfarm, the UK’s largest on-shore windfarm. The trails and facilities are provided free of charge to use at any time of the day, 365 days a year, weather permitting of course, and all that's required to use them is a suitable off-road bike such as a mountain bike. As well as mountain biking, visitors are encouraged to walk, run, cycle and explore Whitelee and its extensive network of tracks and trails at their leisure.

Whitelee Windfarm is situated off the B764 Eaglesham Moor Road, and is 20 minute (10 mile) drive from Glasgow, Kilmarnock and East Kilbride.

Whitelee Mountain Bike Trails

  • The site offers over 4km of off-road trails in a compact area, appealing to a range of abilities with different trail grades, which are explained below.
  • There is also a skills area and pump track, which are ideal for testing and honing bike handling skills required on the wider trail network and beyond.
  • Whether you are an absolute beginner or an avid mountain bike enthusiast this is the perfect place to hone your bike handling skills in a safe environment.

Outer Loop – blue with red sections

The Outer Loop trail has fast, flowing singletrack full of berms, rollers and other features. This trail has eleven optional red sections including drop offs, log rides and rock causeways.

Inner Loop – blue with red sections

The Inner Loop trail gives an alternative option and can be linked with the Outer Trail. This trail also has fast-flowing singletrack, featuring berms rollers and an optional section of North Shore.

Skills Area

The skills loop is located at the western end of the facility incorporating a number of technical trail features such as those found on the red grade sections of the main track but within a short, condensed trail aimed at promoting bike handling skills and rider technique.

Pump Track

The pump track is located at the eastern end of the site, intended to develop skills in 'pumping speed' from the track. This highly condensed track is composed of numerous rollers and berms that riders attempt to progress along without the need to peddle

Windfarm tracks - green grade

Whitelee windfarm, with its 100 miles / 159 kilometres plus of tracks and trails spread over 30 miles square, offers the ideal venue for outdoor pursuits for all ages, abilities and group sizes. The windfarm tracks and trails, as well as habitats can be explored and are open for public access 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Whether looking for a gentle walk, hoping to spot some wildlife or wanting to try more adrenaline fuelled outdoor pursuits, Whitelee has the space for them all.

The main entrance to Whitelee (off B764 Moor Road), hosts a free visitor centre with the following facilities:

  • Toilets (including outdoor toilets with showers)
  • A bike shed
  • A Cafe serving hot drinks and food
  • A great interactive exhibition hall with displays on wind power
  • Ample free parking with 130 spaces and space for coaches

Please note that there are currently no on-site toilets or shower facilities when the visitor centre is closed and the bike shed and car park immediately in front of the visitor centre is locked once the centre closes each day. The additional car park areas remain open all year.

Please also note that the visitor centre closes over the winter period, from mid-December until the start of February.

Please check their website for detailed opening hours:

The windfarm and MTB trails are open throughout the year and are not tied to Visitor Centre opening times.

Thankfully I didn't expect much as the mtb trail was just a few bonus runs as part of a family days cycling around the wind farm, my first thoughts were, what a shame someone wasted money building this.......mtb trails are too short and compressed, there's really nothing to them and even a complete novice would find nothing there to hold their interest for any more than a couple of laps, if it's on your doorstep it's maybe worth a blast if only to keep fitness levels up but then Cathkin Braes will also be on your doorstep and is way better but still lacks any feel, flow or day in the wilderness feeling that we all love.

Good Points
there's a cafe, toilet and bike wash but I can't imagine your bike is going to get very dirty
It's good for family rides, especially if you have kids in a tag along or trailer but don't expect any excitement
Bad Points
short trails
lacking in features
everything feels compressed
doesn't have the feeling it was designed by a mountain biker
