Antur Stiniog mountain bike trail centre is a Downhill MTB centre in Blaenau Ffestiniog, North Wales. There are six DH tracks (a blue, 2 red, 2 black and a double black) varying from approximately 1.2 - 2.5km in length. There is also a Jump Park. All set in a rocky, slate packed, rugged and open terrain.

Antur Stiniog is a full on downhill centre so booking the uplift for the day is core. We reckon about 15 runs come in the day pass and that seems more than enough. The set up is a mini bus uplift service with spaced trailers to protect your bike. Also, the tracks are built to cover those just getting into Downhill through to the hardcore advanced rider.

In May 2015 they built a new red graded section with 200 metres of jumps and berms (starting from the summit) called Scrubadub (with 9 jumps!). They also at the same time did some work on the Drafft trail to add more jumps and some bigger features on the top. In Spring 2017 they opened Bendy-G a 400 m black track with over 20 turns.

Y Du (Black)

  • The Y DU black downhill run is fast and is peppered with gnarly steep rock sections throughout. The trail is also littered with jumps, berms and is very steep.

Black Powder (Black)

  • Black Powder (black) downhill run DH run shares the top 50m of Y DU but then goes down around the other side of the hill. Again rock sections and jumps define this trail.

Bendy-G (Black)

  • 400 metres with 20 turns (hence the name). Built to offer riders a dirt track.

Wild Cart (Red)

  • The Wild Cart DH, Freeride run is steep with berms, step downs and jumps. It flows, is fast and is said to be rideable on a 6-inch travel bike.

Drafft (Red)

  • The Drafft Red DH / Freeride has a steep roll in through the opening berms, followed by corners, berms, jumps and step downs. Again rideable on a 5-6 inch travel bike. Slightly less technical than the Wild Cart above as all features are rollable.

Jymapr (Blue)

  • New in 2014 this is a smoother entry level Blue run and blue grade trail aimed at the novice Dh rider. You will find flowing turns and singletrack. Less steep and longer than the other tracks. Fun for all levels also and can be ridden on a trail bike.

Jump Site

  • The Jump Site is big, fast, full of doubles, tabletops and massive berms.

XC (planned)

  • An 8-9km blue cross country trail is planned around the Tanygrisiau lake.

Other Stuff

  • Antur Stiniog is based in an old slate quarry and is run as a social enterprise.
  • The new visitors centre, cafe, bike wash and showers open in June, July.
  • There is a DH race event being set up for the summer.
  • Amongst the activities here are mountain biking (of course), walking, climbing, fishing, caving, paddling and Velorail
  • In 2016 they took 2nd place in the iBikeride Welsh Trail of the Year awards.

Epic

A great bike park

User Review

Good Points
The trails are awesome, the guys that work there are all friendly and there's a hot shower to be had after a days riding! It's super fast and pretty rough in places but can still cater for the novice rider. We may go to other bike parks but this is our most frequently visited and will remain that way for quite some time!

The best all year round Downhill venue

I've been coming to Antur since Nov 2014 and it is my favourite downhill venue.
It can seem a bit imposing to start as there are some very steep and technical sections but the blue run Jympar is a great way in especially if you are new to downhill or have a trail bike. It's quite long with lots of turns and gives you a great introduction to riding on rock as there's nothing on it that will catch you out. Progress to the reds and you'll start to really think about your riding and where you put your wheels, there are plenty of jumps and drops and they seem to be the most heavily ridden. Once you get to the two black runs though this is where Antur really shines... "Black Powder" is fast and flowing and the other, "Y Du" is trickier with some very gnarly features including the infamous Cliff Drop. If you can master that then you are into 30 to 40 seconds of pure jumping fun in the lower field.
I've marked down the Trail Variety slightly purely because the trials are all hard packed with rock and slate features. However, within the limited surface you'll find plenty of variety no matter what level you ride at... just don't expect loam or roots. The plus side is that it makes Antur a great Winter destination.
I don't think any review of Antur is complete without mentioning the uplift service. There's a fleet of transit minibuses towing Burtech trailers. It's all done on public and private tarmaced road so your bike is not subjected to lots of bouncing around on fireroads. It's also fast and you won't wait long before you're on your way back up the hill.
I've done a couple of days tuition with Adrian there and they have been worth every penny. Adrian knows every inch of the tracks and his teaching technique is good humoured yet concise and to the point. If you really are serious and want to progress past rolling down the blacks to really attacking them (as they were designed for) then his coaching is invaluable.
All in all I can't recommend Antur enough... it's the friendliest MTB centre I know of and the trails are all fun with plenty of features to help you progress.

Antur Stiniog, best DH Centre in UK

I came here from riding XC and managed the Blues and Reds on a trail bike. Got a lesson from Adrian, which in itself is harder to do than any Double Black and have never looked back. You can do all the routes on All Mountain bikes but will definitely benefit from a full on DH bike. You can ride in most weathers and there is no BS whatsoever. Turn up, ride and ride. I've done 16 runs in a day, there's always an uplift waiting when you get to the bottom. The guys are super friendly and helpful. Great food and big helping for hungry bikers. I've ridden here in rain, snow, sideways gales, searing hot temperatures and hail the takes your skin off, all in one day, but the hill dries quickly and is ready whenever you are.
