Nant yr Arian mountain bike trail centre is in the Nant yr Arian forest just inland from Aberystwyth.

With a bit of a wilderness and rugged feel, this purpose built mountain bike centre has 2 reds, 1 epic black trail and a bike skills park.

In spring 2015 a new section of trail built by Xtreme Track was lanched. It is a 400m red grade section with a few jumps and hips. In March 2017 they launched the new bike skills track.

Summit Trail (Red)

  • The Summit is a Red graded difficult trail that is 16km long with a 310m climb and takes around 1.5 – 3.5hrs to complete. This is a very technical and demanding ride with some significantly steep slopes and long climbs.
  • Summit Trail (PDF) Click to download

Pendam Trail (Red)

  • The Pendam is a Red graded 9km long trail with 220m of climbing and takes around  1-2 hours to complete. Technical singletrack and some hard climbs define it. It includes sections of public road and tracks shared with horse riders.
  • Pendam Trail. Click to download.

Syfydrin Trail (Black)

  • The Syfydrin is a Black graded severe trail that is an epic 35km with a climb of 670m and takes around 3-5 hours to complete. The terrain is a mix of technical and flowing single-track and exposed and remote countryside. Many of the sections are also used by vehicles, walkers and horse riders so be aware.

Skills Track

  • Green, blue and red lines with jumps, rollers and step ups.

Other Stuff

  • The coastal university town of Aberystwyth has good nightlife and decent bike shops.

Amazing trails with amazing scenery

Amazing trails with naturally occuring obstacles such as rock climbs made of slate found in the ground. Also the scenery makes it perfect for more casual riders with places to stop and take some pretty pictures, further to this none of the trails are particularly challenging allowing people of all abilities to ride them. One note that should be taken is that there is a very long (category 3) climb towards the end of the trails called legburner, which I wouldn't approach without a fair level of fitness, along with with other hills to get up, but what would you expect its Wales and on mountains ?

Good Points
Well kept trails, and clearly distinguished routes to follow. Also the visitor centre has an extremely nice café with bike washing facilities also, for those that like to keep their bike clean.
Bad Points
Nothing comes to mind, other than the fact it can get quite busy because of its popularity!

My local trail centre. Great trails with linking routes to a wider network if you know where to go. Great riding, rides well in all weather, and new stuff being added all the time at the minute.

Good Points
Great variety of terrain, interchangeable loops and challenging all weather riding.
Bad Points
Gets a bit busy in the holidays, but go early or late and you'll have it to yourself if you prefer your own company.

One of the original and still the best trail centres.

What an awesome place, still one of my favourite places to ride after many years of riding.

"Nant Yr Arian; a great ride, so much to choose from, stunning scenery with plenty of miles. There is enough here to test the experienced rider, or for the new rider to improve their skills. Dip into the single tracks or loose yourself out in the wilds. Just make sure to get back to the centre in time to watch feeding the stunning Red Kites with a cup of tea and a home baked fresh cake. What a place!"

Good Points
Epic trails and single tracks. Stunning views and lots of variety. Plenty of cross country to tap into means you don't see too many people on your ride. The whole thing is linked together with and some sweet well marked, well built and well maintained single track sections. The notorious "Leg burner" is a bit of a haul, but you do learn to love it as the scenery opens up the higher you climb. The beauty distracts you from the burn. I have been riding around here since before the trails were put in and now I am lucky enough to work at the centre. It means I get to see riders come whooping back down "High as a Kite" covered all in mud grinning from ear to ear. I love to see the knowing smiles of a hard earned shared experience as they sit down to enjoy their pot of tea and excitedly chat about their adventures. The centre has a great cafe with good choice of quality food. Once you have tried Nant Yr Arian you will definitely want to come back!

We did the Syfydrin trail the day after a weather front moved through. It had mostly dried out the next morning when we rode, so no complaints there. Not sure about grading it black though. I imagine the wilderness aspect may be responsible for the grading but the features as such are red all the way in my opinion.

Be prepared for the worst on this trail, because you will be on your own and out of reach of a convenient bike shop. We had no issues ourselves, but can imagine how life could get difficult very quickly out there. Lovely trail with varied terrain and plenty to keep you occupied. Amazing views on a good day like we had. The Summit trail is good fun. Make it all the way up Leg Burner in one go for a real feeling of achievement!!!

The trail center is a fine one with a top notch cafe, bike wash and helpful, friendly staff. If only they had a bike shop! Then there's the Red Kites! Wow is all I can say.

Great trail centre with good facilities, only ever done the Syfydrin Trail which is a real 'out there' trail and includes some back roads and tracks but also utilises all the singletrack within the forest.
Its a proper ride with big climbs and descents but stunning views if the weathers ok.
There is a lot of riding to be done here and this ranks as one of my fave trails as it has a real natural feel with all the good aspects of a modern trail centre, without the crowds.
Make sure you are prepared if you are taking on the Syfydrin Trail as parts are very remote and if you have an issue its a very long way back to any sort of help, which actually adds to its charm I think.

Tucked away in Mid Wales

I haven't managed to ride all the trails here, but the two that I have have been great, good fun single track descents. Aprt from the one fire road climb there's nothing too strenuous.

User Review

Good Points
Single track decents! I've ridden here a few times and it never seems to be busy.
Bad Points
Fire road climb from the bottom. No bike shop at centre, Aber would be nearest if you have issues.
