Lady Cannings is in Sheffield, on the edge of Houndkirk Moor close to the Peak National park 20 minutes from Sheffield centre. Lady Cannings has two blue mountain bike trails.

This is the first MTB trail in England where crowdfunding has been used to help drive the initial investment needed. Funding has also been significantly supplemented by GO Outdoors. The project has been led by Ride Sheffield working with Sheffield council. Bike Track specialist trail builders built the trails.

The first blue trail launched in July 2015 called the Blue Steel Trail. The second blue trail is called Cooking on Gas and launched in April 2017.

Blue Steel

 • The first trail planned for Lady Cannings is a Blue XC 1.4km trail. It's flowy, with rollers and bumps throughout. You can pretty much ride it with minimal pedalling. Blue Steel was the first UK trail funded by crowdfunding.

Cooking on Gas

 • Simply ride to the top of the plantation and, where you’d normally turn right on the forestry road, turn left for a slice of perfectly sculpted loveliness. Divided into four sections, it has a distinct character all its own, markedly different to Blue Steel. Once again blue in grade, it still incorporates some big features, so there’s fun for everyone. Cooking on Gas was funded by GO Outdoors.

Directions

 • The best postcode for the trail is the same as the pubs, S11 7TS. The trailhead is at this grid reference SK 28238 83343. You can park on Ringinglow road or just off houndkirk road. Check out the map below for the trailhead.

You can park at Lady Cannings, or across the road from the pub round the corner which is a great place to stop by after a ride and get a drink or a bite to eat.

Good fun, and a great location to enjoy a longer ride in the Peaks if you fancy a big day out.

Good Points
I started and ended a loop round the Peaks with a few runs on the trails at Lady Cannings, and it made for a great way to enjoy the ride.

The trails are good fun and put a massive grin on your face, they are not too technical but are as challenging as you choose to make them with features you can approach as to suit your skills.

I was a bit more composed at the start than at the end of the ride, but loved every minute of it.

the ride back to the start is not hard either so it is great to do a number of runs.

Bad Points
There could be a few bigger more technical options included in the future as a way to encourage progression.

Lady Cannings Trail - progressive and great for skills development

Lady Cannings is a great way for riders of all abilities (and ages) to experience what it must be like flying through the Endor forest on a speeder bike, (Star Wars - Return of the Jedi reference). There are two tracks, each one giving riders a different experience. The original and more established 'Blue Steel' offers tight turns and a rolling track that flows through the trees. If your a newer rider, take it at a steady speed to start then get quicker each run, and opportunities to get airborne become apparent. The short switch back climb back up to the main access track back to the top can be a sting in the tail if your not prepared, look round those corners and don't loose momentum!

Riding back up to the main forestry road puts you back at the trail head(s) again. On your second run take the newer 'Cooking on Gas' trail. This is a longer trail and was opened a couple of years ago. There are natural breaks in the run down as the forestry fire roads intersect. This isn't a bad thing, in fact it enhances the experience, with the different sections offering an opportunity to focus on a different skill set. I run a local MTB coaching company, Trail Advantage, and Cannings features in our courses to develop cornering on berms and flow, before we head out onto the adjacent Houndkirk Moor. New riders will benefit from multiple runs down this track as it has so much to offer in terms of skills progression. So either stash some sarnies at the top of the trail and session away to build skills, or include Cannings as part of a bigger ride exploring the great riding in Eastern Moors and beyond.

I ride both trails regularly with my son (10 years old) and it brings another element of enjoyment as i follow him down watching his confidence grow. Cooking on Gas is a good one to do with kids who are getting into the sport. its wider and flowier than Blue steel, and sight lines between the trees are good for following parents, so you can let your young un go for it.

Finish off at the Norfolk Arms for a celebratory Pint and good food also keep up to date with developments at www.ridesheffieldsheffield.org.uk . The cannings trails were built thanks largely to crowd funding and Ride Sheffield are currently building some new trails over the hill at Redmires. So if you fancy donating then you can via the web site.

I was recommended Lady Cannings as an ideal place to take your kids for a ride, So I thought i'd give it a go with my 9 year old and we wasn't disappointed, The trail consisted of two blue graded routes both have great flow with big berms and rollers so requires very little pedalling, the only real handwork was the climb up the bridleway between the trails to get back to the top,
So we took our time on the climb to save our enegry for the fun downhill bits.
The setting for the trails is great as well, a commercially managed, coniferous, woodland which the routes twist and turn through adding to the fun and gave us the feeling that we had a proper days mountain biking.
Looking forward to going back and adding the trails to an xc route in the area.

Great trail, worth a look even if travelling to the area. Do contribute to Ride Sheffields next project at Rad mires - these two tracks could be linked into a fantastic day's ride. http://www.ridesheffield.org.uk/2015/12/radmires-new-crowd-funder-announced/

Good Points
Great flow and nice rolling sections. Suitable for all riders as it gets progressively harder the faster you ride it. Just a joy to see this being developed and so many people getting a kick out of riding it.
Bad Points
Easy access to the areas leaves the trail vulnerable to the irresponsible riders and non-riders alike. Also just wish it was even longer (although it's a nice length and an easy spinback to the top on the fireroad.

Overall a great crowd funded trail for all levels and shows just what can be done

User Review

Good Points
A well looked after swooping trail for all levels, short and sharp with enough in it to challenge the majority of riders....
Bad Points
Short but that's due to land constraints also as its single track you can often get caught up behind slower riders or children with almost no places to pass them but again that's due to it being open for all skill levels.

A great trail that can be ridden over and over again on it's own or added to a XC ride around the numerous bridleways. Perfect for all abilities

I work for Kirklees Adventurous Activity Team, and have recently taken a group of young people up to the plantation to ride - needless to say they couldn't get enough of it. Even though ther is currently only a short section of trail built, it is a section that you will want to ride again and again. It's perfect to practice trail technique and hone skills.
The trail is clean and well managed and great fun.
The group I took there are wanting to return again as soon as possible
