Directions
The Carron Valley Car Park is on the left, about 2km past Carron Bridge.

Carron Valley Mountain Bike Trails are in Stirling, Scotland.

They have a red and an orange free ride section.

The Red Trail(s)

  • This is about 10.5 km of trail made up of a number of linked sections. It starts at a section called the Pipe Dream which gets you warmed up gently for what is to follow. This trail has steep climbs, rock descents, stone slab drops and a final Runway (orange graded) section that is made for flow and pump and jumps (all rollable). It's famed for the Black Waterfall (known as Eas Dubh) and Kelpie staircase (rock steps).

Having been laid down in 2006 the trail has grown a strong reputation. Each section is well waymarked making it easy to session your favourite bits and doing it twice is worth it.

The Runway - Freeride

  • Berms, jumps, stone drop-off and tabletops. This is alos the end of the Red.

History

  • Originally the trails were set up to be a much bigger venture to emulate what had been created in the 7 Stanes but to do that within a closer radius to the metropolitan centres of Glasgow and Edinburgh. It didn't quite get that far in development but what has been built in Carron Valley for mountain bikers is well worth the visit and of course you never know where the future will lie.

a good little red route. the trail is split into 3 sections so that you can easily redo the section you have just done. the climb is nothing to challenging and reached the top of eas dubh without to much effort. the descent was good, few rocks jumps and berms. nothing to tricky, the same goes for the second section the cannonball run. this was a bit faster but felt the berms needed to be built up a bit more to really make the most of the speed. the final descent is the runway which makes the whole trip here worth it. you can go as big as you want over the features. all are rollable or set up nicely to get air. very well made trail. easily worth a ride back up to do it again.

Good Points
This trail is just fun & great for fitness.
Trail is in great condition & is all weather & all year round use.

The runway is cracking fun & will definitely out a smile on your face. Some great berms & switchbacks to keep you thinking quickly, great 1-2 hours if fun, also a great place to learn.
Bad Points
Lack of facilities in terms of changing & parking can fill up quickly too.

Despite being smaller and less used than 7stanes sites, a good number of serious bikers go there and a high standard has been set on Strava over the years and a lot of speed can be achieved if that appeals to you (like me). But there isn't really much to do generally - if you go there a few times it becomes very familiar very quickly. Not worth travelling more than an hour to and not at all with a young family. Good place to take some older children or adult beginners though all the same.

Good Points
Well built trails that mostly drain well; good for beginners as most technical sections can be easily bypassed; the runway is an excellent fast and fun segment with numerous big features that can be taken at speed and provide a challenge. Not as well used as 7stanes sites and therefore in better condition and less busy. Closer to Glasgow than 7stanes. The whole circuit is a good ride to do in a one-er (and repeat until tired) but it is easy to shortcut and do just the runway, or runway and cannonball run, missing out the top Eas Dubh section. It is possible to climb all the way up on forest road if you wish to avoid the trail climb section.
Bad Points
The red routes are not particularly difficult and lack any very rough, steep or challenging features; the upper part of the climb to the top is on forest road only; there is no skills park and no green route for beginners/kids/families/general mucking about; the car park can be very busy with walkers, fishers etc; there is no black route;

Good Points
Good for beginners, training laps and 24/7 all weather riding.
Cheap parking.

Rides can be lengthened using the extensive fireroads, single track and walkers routes. (Meikle Bin is a fun descent).

Mobile cafe often there at weekends which makes a visit even better.
Bad Points
Dog walkers who don't clean up after their dogs (fireroads) and stray walkers on the bike trails.

More of a blue route with red options than a full red, but that's no bad thing. Short but sweet. Great place to come and practice some skills and just have fun down the runway. Everything in good condition, including the toilets at the trailhead. Only a pity there's nowhere close by to grab a bite to eat.

User Review

Good Points
Would be a great place to practice skills as easy to go round and try again. Trails are in good condition and not crowded. Runway (listed as Freeride) is a grin inducing finish to the trails. Wish we'd had more time to stay around and give it a couple more goes. Car parking is cheap and the toilet block clean and tidy.
Bad Points
Limited variety. No cafés or local services nearby when you've finished.

Good for beginners or kids. Not enough in it to be keep me interested.

User Review

Good Points
Good for beginners looking to get into the sport and have somewhere close by to practice on and build confidence. The runway is probably the best option. Small course which can be lapped in around 45 mins.

Trails are good quality and seem to be looked after.
Bad Points
Not enough variety or challenge for anyone who considers themselves above a beginner, other than for training/sessioning. Definitely not a red as it claims.

Carron Valley is my local playground and whilst yes it is small I am still not going to knock it having come from a very flat part of York where I had nowhere to play!

CV is great if you live within 30 mins drive and want a fitness blast on the evening. Pre-Strava I'll admit CV was not that great for me with only three sections of down it was all over very quick. After joining Strava it became a lot more fun as I used it to increase my fitness and chase down QoM. Suddenly it felt like a new place. Now I know Strava is not everyone's cup of tea so I'll leave it at that.

Runway is pretty awesome it has to be said!

Good Points
free ride part is good. Empty during the week best time to go. Good for pratice run's or to kill some time or to take the kids. I used it a couple of times as its my closest trail.
Bad Points
not enough trails and not long enough. As all in only takes an hour to do it all to get to the top and right back down. There is enough woodland there to make trails but only 3 trails there and the picture they use to advertise this is false as that picture is on of the track at all.
