Description

Machynlleth and Dyfi mountain bike base are based by Machynlleth in the Dyfi Forest south of Snowdonia in Powys in North Wales. They are also referred to as the Mach trails. There are four main trails: Mach1, Mach2, Mach3, and Cli-mach X. There is also a pump track. The first three are natural trails running deep into the forests and mountains. The Cli-machX is waymarked

As this is a base each trail facility will differ on an individual basis and generally be very limited or non-existent. So make sure you come prepared. It's close by to the Dyfi Bike Park.

Mach1 - (Blue)

  • Mach 1 is a 16km fast natural blue trail and is not too technical.

Mach2 - (Red)

  • Mach 2 is a 23km red run. The up is very steep and so the down is as rewarding.

Mach3 - (Black)

  • Mach 3 is a 30 km black run. It shares much of the Mach 2 route and then heads out further into the countryside. It’s famous for the Chute which is very steep, rocky, and dark.

Cli-MachX (Red)

  • Climachx is a 15k red run. It is in the Dyfi forest and has 9km of carved single track with rock slabs, drops, turns, and jumps. Famed to have the longest xc descent in Wales this includes the famous 'eye of the needle, a big jump with a narrow landing between two trees on the other side. It ends with 8 big berms.

Pump Track

  • Machynlleth has a mini pump track, funded by The Howies Dyfi Enduro & Machynlleth Town Council.

Dyfi Enduro

  • The Dyfi Enduro is a mountain bike event/festival that takes place in Machynlleth every May. The event pays for the up-keep of the trails. So check it out. They have their own Facebook page

Clubs and Groups

Other Stuff

  • The Dyfi forest is used for motor sports events on about 5 weekends a year. On these days the ClimachX trail is closed. So check out the website.
  • You can access maps for the old style original 3 Mach trails here

Best in the UK!

Some of the best technically demanding trails in the UK, tricky to navigate but rewarding when you find them

What do you like?

Technical, varied terrain, all trail types and something for most skill levels

What could be improved?

Hard to navigate if your not familiar. apart from Machynlleth pump track there isn't much easy / blue grade trails

Would you recommend?

yes

Dyfi - Lots of choice, excellent 'enduro' trails

An area of great varied riding which may mean leaving the beaten track, but well worth it

What do you like?

Lots of old and still-used motocross trails in the dyfi fores give great choices of rides, especially after doing an enduro there to see more of the area. Gravity enduro and similar events creating more trails in the forest has also been great, and the popularity of these events must be an economic boost for the area also. Climax is almost all beginner friendly on par with Nant Yr Arian. While I love the last descent it's always seemed out of place compared to the rest which I rarely ride for the most part.

What could be improved?

Trail maintainance is voluntary by a few locals I believe, kudos to them, but it's a shame the trails cant get more upkeep. Believe climax had a donation box?

Would you recommend?

Yes

Great quiet trail - going again this weekend

I really like these trails, I have a caravan in Pennal about 4 miles down the road so they're really close. Very quiet trails in a lovely setting. The climach x is the one I normally do & it's fairly quick to get round. You do end up after the climach x with a proper cheesy grin on your face & the last 2-3k is fantastic. There are no facilities to speak of so I think that's why it's getting lower reviews (had to give it 2.5 as there is a small car park). There is a great pub in Corris a mile or so away - the slaters arms - good food & beer & worth a visit. http://www.theslatersarms.com/

What do you like?

Quiet, fun, different rides for abilities & length, beautiful setting

What could be improved?

Can be hard to find if you're not used to Wales but I think that keeps it quiet.

Dyfi - lots to do

Its a while since I did these trails and I remember at the time thinking I'd need several days to have a proper look - really do need to go back and see what I've missed.

What do you like?

FAST!

What could be improved?

Nothing major.

Climach-X

A great little trail, big climbs through stunning forest which all finishes off with allegedly the longest downhill section in wales which whilst I can't confirm it, is long and challenging in places. Also worth mentioning that this trail is based in the Dyfi forest and there are loads of other trails to ride in the area, worth getting a route (off the net) or from the Bike Shop in Machynlleth and you can do what I did which was mix up some extra loops through the forest with the Climach -X trail to make an awesome ride. Again as with a lot of these types of trails,go prepared as its a long walk if you have a problem.

What do you like?

Another quiet trail possibly the longest downhill section of trail.

What could be improved?

Very little facilities

Yes

Cli-mach X

I have heard it anecdotedly said this is the longest downhill section in Wales. Whether true or not it feels long. The grin factor is supreme. It is a graded red but a red with bite. It is well worth the search to find it just for the descent.

What do you like?

The downhill is grin city. Lots of rocks.

What could be improved?

Uphill has a lot of fire road and a bit boring

Would you recommend?

Yes
