Launched in 2023 by Cycling UK and Natural Resources Wales, the Traws Eryri (Trans Snowdonia) is a 124-mile (200-kilometer) multi-terrain trail that links Machynlleth and Conwy. Designed with mountain bikes in mind, this new route combines forest fire roads, byways, ancient drover’s tracks, and some quieter roads to span the Eryri National Park from south to north. Unlike quick sessions on hand-built singletrack, the Traws Eryri offers an epic mountain biking adventure that takes around four days to complete, rather than just a few hours.

The Traws Eryri cleverly connects established mountain biking trail centers along the way, allowing riders to explore some fantastic singletrack if the mood strikes. Here are some of the featured trail centers:

  1. Coed y Brenin: Located in the heart of Snowdonia, Coed y Brenin is renowned for its purpose-built mountain bike trails. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert rider, Coed y Brenin offers a variety of trails to suit all levels.

  2. Penmachno: The Penmachno trails wind through the Gwydyr Forest, offering a mix of natural and man-made singletrack. Expect challenging descents and stunning forest scenery.

  3. Gwydir Forest: This forested area near Betws-y-Coed features a network of trails suitable for mountain biking. From flowing singletrack to technical sections, Gwydir Forest has something for everyone.

As you pedal through the Welsh landscape, you’ll also pass charming towns and villages. Whether you prefer self-supported camping or a more comfortable stay, the Traws Eryri accommodates various preferences:

  • Self-Supported Camping: Experienced riders can tackle the Traws Eryri on a self-supported trip, carrying their own camping and cooking equipment. There are excellent campsites along the way, such as Graig Wen, which overlooks the Mawddach Estuary.

  • Bunkhouses and Hostels: Eryri boasts several bunkhouses and hostels, providing an affordable way to spend a night off the trail. Wash your kit, enjoy a proper mattress, and recharge for the next day’s adventure.

No matter how you choose to experience the Traws Eryri, you’re in for an unforgettable adventure amidst the grandeur of Eryri’s nine mountain ranges. So saddle up, explore the Welsh wilderness, and let the ever-changing views and thrilling descents make it all worthwhile!
